So I got pulled over for starting my truck.....

Well I'd watch out in Fort Collins, they seem to be cracking down on emmissions. I started my truck this weekend and some smoke puffed out of my exhaust like every diesel does when you start it and I got "pulled over" in my parking spot! I never even put the truck in gear! I was told it was littering, excessive smoke, pollution and one other I can't seem to remember. The cop told me if I blew any smoke when I left he would write me a ticket and that I would have to go to court, pay a fine etc! You don't even want to know how I feel about the Fort Collins PD right now.

Are you serious????

Smoke on start up is very common for pretty much any diesel. I wonder if he tickets big rigs for doing the same thing??? or when they drive down the road and jam gears and blow a puff of smoke?? That seems like a bit much to me, I could understand if you were blacking out the interstate, but wow .

Thats what I said, I would completely understand if I was being a prick and smoke out cars etc. But all I did was start the truck! No revving up it no nothing!

WOW! If he wrote a ticket I would've contested it. That has got to be the stupidest reason for a ticket I have ever heard. That's like giving a dog a ticket for pooping in its own yard.

Welcome to the inherent problem with having a modified vehicle; the cops are out to get you.

I actually got out of an "excessive smoke" ticket once by carrying the relevant California law in my glovebox. The California statute allows 10 seconds of smoke of any opacity, which is just way too generous. If my truck is smoking for 10 seconds straight, something isn't right... Colorado might have the same terms in their "excessive smoke" law.

Another thing in the California law is that there are NO smoke regulations above 5000 feet... I wouldn't know if that section made it into Colorado law either.

I wasn't aware that smoke could get you littering and "pollution" tickets. Good luck on those ones.

It shouldn't be hard to get out of, provided that it wasn't moving at the time. Get a few friends with stock trucks to fire them up, or even better, let the judge fire them up and watch the smoke.

I don't know if it's still in the manuals, but the owner's manual on my '90 says to always start the vehicle with the fuel pedal halfway down.

The transit buses around here blow more coal than I do (except when bombing) and I live a block from the local PD they see me all the time. I'm safe so far.

Man, that is tough. I'd never be able to go to Taco Bell if I lived out there.
