My Import Experience

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to let you know how well my import experience went.

Bought a 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 5.9 from Dave Smith Motors in Kellogg Idaho this past Monday. They organized all the paperwork to make it easy at the border. Everything went like clockwork and as of Wednesday afternoon, the truck has been inspected at Can Tire, registered and insured by ICBC - less than 48hours all told! Wow.

I'd do that again in a heartbeat. Very easy. PM me for help if you are thinking about doing this and saving yourself thousands of dollars by buying "down south" Maybe Canadian dealers will get the message and lower their prices!

Evan,

I just got CT to do the provincial at the same time as they did the federal inspection. ICBC requires a provincial inspection for all out of province vehicles.

As far as taxes go, I paid 5% GST when I brought it across the border and th 7% PST when I went to the local ICBC office to get the registration and insurance done. I didn't have to pay any Idaho tax. So the taxes are the same as you'd pay at any dealer in BC... except you will save since the truck prices are way lower in the US.

Alboy,

I've seen similar trucks for sale on autotrader.ca for anywhere from $35-42K. I paid just over $30K US. Check out Dave Smith Motors NEW, USED, Wholesale and see what you can get! I'm certainly a happy customer.

As far as warranty goes, there ain't none! The truck was outside the 36K/3year warranty anyways. The only thing I will lose out on is the 100k engine warranty. For the savings, I can pay for alot of work on the truck, so I am gonna roll the dice and hope the truck is a good one!

Good decision to go south. I used to work at a CT in Edmonton and when the dollar was par with the american dollar Out of Province inspections probably doubled if not tripled. Tons of people are doing that and I agree we have been getting screwed by our canadian dealerships for too long!

I went through DSM and I'm in San Diego, twenty miles from the Mexican border. Glad everything went smooth for you. Our DMV here scrutinized DSM's paperwork with a finetooth comb and the clerk remarked,"We get lots of DSM sales in here." I believe DSM can only export used ones which are the best buy anyway. Best of luck!
