Turbo Upgrade Questions?
Is it possible to do a Super B single turbo w/o fuel upgrades? What kinda power rwhp wise can I see with the super B with just I/E/Edge EZ/CFM+ IM? I'm trying to gain a significant amount of power but was trying to avoid a fuel upgrade if not needed. Will the Edge EZ suffice for the Super B? I was also planning on upgrading the FMIC while the turbo was out. Any suggestions would be great. My current mods: FSP 5" Turbo Back Exhaust CFM+ Intake Manifold. FMB Grid Heater Delete/Spacer AFE Stage 2 Intake Edge EZ Thanks. -Val

Because the Super B has such a broad efficiency range it will work great with your current mods. You may not see the gains you would see if you were running a bigger chip but overall efficiency will improve, power, fuel economy, reduced temperature etc. The more inefficient your truck is running i.e. black smoke and heat the more the power the Super B will increase. Why are you not interested in a higher HP performance chip, if you do not mind me asking?

Is the super B a direct drop in? How is the boost regulated, i'm trying not to overboost. I plan to upgrade to a smarty, how much of a limitation do I have with the tranny? So i'm fine with stock fuel?

Your transmission question is a hard one to answer, it boils down to user responsibility. I run almost 500HP with my stock 47RE but I know the limitations of it and drive within them. I would say as long as you stayed under the higher settings on that smarty you should be okay 80HP or less towing. The 48RE is a much better transmission than the 47RE internally but still has its limitations. The great thing about the 48RE is that if you want 500HP the stock transmission can take it with at valve body and convertor upgrade. For the 47RE to hold 500HP you are looking at a complete exchange transmission and convertor.

I have a local guy with a 2001 Dodge 3500 that had the frame cut and a 25' beavertail built in place of a bed. He hauls a rece car on it. We did an Edge Juice W/Attitude, FASS 150/95, and BD Super B turbo with an AFE stage 2 intake. That things hauls the mail! With the turbo his EGT's allow him to use more of the programmer without the EGT's going out of control. Absolutely no surge and no noticeable lag over the stock turbo. Install was very direct and absolutely no hassle. Unbolt stock and install the BD Super B. It also comes with the downpipe so you dont have to buy that seperatley. I will say that for a hard working truck, it is one of the best choices in turbo's that you can make. BD puts out a great turbo that flat out works. Pun intended! The stock turbo will leave you with EGT's that go above 1300 with an empty truck with the Edge in level 2 on a hard climb. With the BD Super B you will need level 4 to get the same EGT's, so you get access to more useable power to do the job without harming your engine. Call it inseurance... Call it wise....call it a done deal! |

Dave, The edge ez in "3" mode, isn't that the same as Smartys 80hp mode? What hp gains will I see with the superB with its limitation to 40lbs? So I can't reuse my 5" Downpipe thats a part of my exhaust? -V

I would expect about 20-30HP gain on the 65HP level with cooler EGT'S and likely better fuel economy. Those are just very ball park figures, there are too many variable to know for sure, the most accurate way to know would be to dyno before and after and measure HP and torque numbers, EGT temps and fuel economy. If you get that data, I am sure we would all like to know The only limitation to the Super B would be if you stacked a 140HP tuner with your EZ and ran big injectors. Then I would recommend the BD Special or even BD Twins. In 80HP mode and no injectors you will not likely get 40PSI, so stick with the Super B Single. The Super B comes with an adjustable waste gate and 4" down pipe. The outlet on the Super B is 4" so if your 5" downpipe is tapering down to your factory turbo outlet it will have to be replaced with down pipe that has a larger 4" outlet.
