I have wanted a diesel truck for many years but couldn't quite bring my self to spend the extra ten grand for one. When I upgraded my camper last winter and it was 8,000 pounds my little half ton Dodge 1500 Hemi squatted down to the rear axels. I knew it was time to get a heavier truck and the Cummins that I always wanted.

Bought mine because of the Cummins! I know ALOT of family and friends who drive a Dodge with the Cummins and everyone of them have had great luck with their trucks, some of which have over 250,000 miles with little or no trouble. I'm happy with the looks, I get alot of compliments from friends and strangers alike but the main selling point was all engine! After all a trouble free vehicle is what it's all about!

2nd gen's are awesome trucks! I love the sound....they sound like a real diesel truck! My dad has an '01 and sometimes I wanna trade him.....you made a great choice with the 2nd generation.

Well, I've never owned a dodge prior to my first 04.5 purchase. Now keep in mind this story is based on the current inventory in August, 2004. I wanted something inexpensive, so i stuck with the very base model (ST) with a 6-speed stick, tow package, 4 door, and diesel engine. I test drove the Dodge for about a 15 mile drive down the highway and on the way back, I stopped off at the Ford dealer, parked the truck up front of their doors and (by accident) set off the panic alarm when i went inside and pressed the fob to lock it. Well, needless to say, I got a little attention and I was approached by a sales rep. I told him, convince me that Ford is a better way to go, otherwise i'm going back to Dodge to finish up this purchase. He walked off, talked to the manager and brought back 3 sets of keys and told me, pick one. I picked the closest model i could find, which of course, was practically fully loaded because they don't keep much stock in the "fleet vehicles" at my local dealer. As i went to hop in and leave, the sales rep said, "feel the power....get out on the highway and get into it...feel the power", so hey...who am i to refuse that?

So, I drove down the highway, took the same route i took with the Dodge and I was disappointed at several things i noticed.

-More road noise when driving 65-75pmh. My wife could hardly hear me (might have been worth it, if that was it)

-I did as expected and got into it....disappointing and the only thing that came to my mind was "typical ford".

-I felt every bump and every other detail of the road and kept thinking to myself, that Dodge had 245's on it and they were stiff highway tires...this cant be...but it was.

-Overall feel of the Ford was poor compared to the Dodge. Not to mention the turning radius on the Ford was unimpressive.

So, I drove back to the Ford dealer and walked back over the sales rep that gave me the keys and I told him, thank you for helping me make my decision...he was smiling like "eh?...eh?...big truck go good, yes?" I told him i'm going to buy the dodge and he turned around....asked me to wait...brought back the dealer manager and had me explain what i found in difference.

Sounds like Ford has worked on some of these things, like spraying the inside of the frame to quiet that da** road noise down, any ford owners know exactly what im talking about. But in the end, the Dodge was definitely a better buy.

I also went to the GMC/Chev dealer and the fleet dealer wouldn't even show me their trucks. So....there it is...that's why i picked up my Dodge. Since then, i've traded off the 04.5 for an 06 with all the bells and whistles and oh...one thing i forgot to mention...I traded my 02 Mustang GT that was fully loaded for this truck. Enough said?

Now I could have got a big discount to buy the Dodge, and diesel was the only way I would go. Ford was never even considered, But without Ford there would be a million mechanics out of work. I was moving and needed something that was reliable, The front end are very week, the transmission was made in Japan the engine still has transfer pump and timing speed sensor problems. There is a lot less ground clearance and it is noisier than my GMC 3500 4x4 Duramax Allison Crew-cab Long box with 17 inch aluminum wheels. The 5.9 with Bosch In-line Injection Pump was a great engine, If you took care of it, it was bullet proof, there were problems, the dowel pins and porous blocks and leaking front covers. None of them deal breakers then there was the VP44, and I don't need the aggravation. PLAY SAFE!

OUCH.

Look at it this way. BD earned their money also. They make great products just to take EVERYONES (not just yours) hard earned

Love the Engine, Dodge is so-so, 94-97 Ford crew would be an awesome combination with the cummins.
