painting/bed lining chrome bumpers and grill

thinking of either painting or a diy bedlining my chrome bumpers. my front bumper has a ding in it, was there when i got the truck, so i would try to bang it out or put some type of filler in it.

i have never done anything like this before. how hard is it and should i go with a bedliner or paint? what will last longer and chip less. any directions from anyone who has done this before would be great also.

new wheels will be on this week hopefully that will be machined/black is the reason i am looking at doing this.

thanks in advance

here is a pic of the front and you can see the ding.

If you paint over chrome there is a solution/primer you have to spray them with first. I am doing the DIY bed liner. My uncle owns a body shop and has the gun to do it with. I googled some pics. Just search google images and there are a lot of good pics. It looks good.

I tried it on my front bumper. First I sanded it down then used self-etching primer and paint. It didnt hold long. Then I striped it down using a blue disk on my grinder, self-etching primer, then spray on bed liner. That held good for about 4 months then started chiping.
I didnt want to mess with it again so I took the bumper off, completely striped it of all plastic and took it to the powdercoater. For $100 they sand blasted the bedliner/chrome off and put 3 coats of gloss black powdercoat. Looks incredible and hasnt scratched or chiped in the 6 months or so (I think) that it's been done.

I didnt have good luck with the grill either. I sanded the chrome down real good (cant blast it or the plastic will be ruined), used self-etching primer again and paint. Held untill the first rain storm....it blasted the paint off. I re did it with plastic paint (used regular spray paint the first time). It lasted for a while like that but then it started chiping around the edges. I striped it all down again, resanded then sprayed rubberized undercoating (3M) on it. It's been holding great so far. Been stuck behind dumb trucks loosing their loads, hard rain storms, and bug infested highways and it's still holding great. Hasnt faded chiped or anything yet. I think it's been about 3 months or so now.

where did you get the rubberized undercoating spray at? do you use it by its self, or is it a base and you paint it? your truck looks great.

I got it from my sister who works at 3M, but I think wallyworld sells it too. I just used it by it'self, not sure if it's paintable or not. Thanks for the compliment!!

do you think the rubberized coating would work on the bumper?

Probably. Honestly though I think it looks kinda cheep. I'm wanting to buy a painted grill to replace mine with. The stuff is tuff though and flexes with the plastic grill.
