1999 cummins, auto, 4x4. . .i was driving yesterday and pulled into a parking lot and the truck just died. went to start it and all it did was turn over. i did notice that the fuel pump did not run, but i did hear the system purging. . .how do i check if my fuel pump is good or not?

First off,

The lift pumps on the early 24v's were notorious for failing. The only way to check it is with a pressure gauge on the output of the pump or the inlet on the fuel filter (same tube). If I am not mistaken the stock pump puts out about 8-10lbs. Unfortunately, when the lift pump fails, the NP44 is usually not far behind. I had a '99 and it had the same problem. Good luck.

the lift pump is not the fuel pump is it? isnt the lift pump what i hear when i crank the motor then turn the key to on before it starts, and let that pump run for about 30 seconds to get the air out of the lines?

Correct. the lift pump is what supplies the injector pump with fuel. Try opening the drain valve on the filter housing so that you can visually see fuel coming out so you can make sure that the pump is working properly. If it still does not start, you might have a problem with your injector pump.

Key trick will only work on 01 and 02's I believe. Does the fuel volume increase when you turn the key on and leave the valve open on the canister??? If it does the pump is probably pumping, if it doesn't or no tby much, it's definately a lift pump issue. Mine did exactly what yours did, and it was the pump. You really need to check the fuel pressure on the truck to know. Lift pumps are a pretty notorious problem on 98.5-02 24 Valve trucks.
