I updated my original post in this thread with the following: What is bypass filtration and how does it work? The standard Mopar oil filter for these trucks filters down to about 35 micron at 98.7% efficiency. The Mopar filter is made by Fleetguard, but it is their cheaper paper (cellulose) filter. It is a low cost filter made for Dodge dealers to throw on our trucks. Fleetguard is a good company and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cummins. They make a better filter called their Stratapore filter. This filter has a synthetic filter media (microglass) is rated at 25 micron at 98.7% efficiency. The particles suspended in your oil that do the most wear over time are between 7 and 12 micron. Much of these particles are soot from diesel fuel combustion (soot loading) and full flow filters miss most of it. So rather than filtering out these particles, they are passed through the filter and remain circulating in suspension in you oil and staying in your engine and bearings. The challenge for filter manufacturers is to product a filter that filters soot and other particles out better but still flows well enough so it does not starve the engine of oil pressure. Different filter medias exhibit different flow properties, like how many gallons per minute they can flow for each square inch of filter media surface area. You could take stacks and stacks of paper filter media and make a filter that was rated to capture 2 micron particles at 98.7% efficiency, but it would require a huge filter element with lots of surface area to overcome the fact that cellulose has poor filtration and flow characteristics. You'd have a paper filter the size of your truck bed to flow at full flow and filter that well. So the first thing to deal with is the fact that to get filtering that gets down to 2 micron at 98.7%, we need better filter media with better flow characteristics so we don't need huge filters that can't fit anywhere. The other factor that comes into play still is flow rate. Hence the term "bypass." Rather than try to filter 100% of your oil pumps throughput, a bypass system takes about 10% of the oil pumps throughput and filters that oil down to 2 micron. The other 90% of the oil passing the filter intake is not taken into the bypass filter but rather just passes through the full flow filter as usual. This means that your full flow (normal) filter still gets a pretty full feed of oil to filter while the bypass system sips off 10% to super filter. So this equates to your truck like this: In 10 miles of driving, the bypass filtration system super filters your entire oil capacity once down to 2 microns at 98.7% efficiency. Getting back to full flow filters with the Mopar at 35 micron and the Stratapore at 25. AMSOIL uses Donaldson Endurance nanofiber filtration technology in their full flow filters as well. The AMSOIL full filters are rated to 15 micron and flow better than the cellulose 35 micron filters. By having a good 15 micron full filter along with a bypass filter you have a full flow filter that captures a bigger majority of the particles suspended in oil, leaving your bypass system to do a better job on the finer particles rather than clogging up with sub-35 micron particles. The whole idea is to couple good filtration with great oil to get the best engine protection and oil longevity. The FS2500 bypass system is rated to 2.78 micron at 98.7% and costs more than double what the AMSOIL system costs. AMSOIL has been making bypass filtration systems for over 25 years now. The AMSOIL system is rated to 2.00 micron at 98.7%. So with the AMSOIL system you are getting better filtration for less $$$. With AMSOIL engine oil and an AMSOIL bypass system, you can run 15k miles, then change your filters, go 15k more miles, then dump oil and change filters. Intervals may be shorter on modified or over-fueled engines due to increased soot loading rates. You don't have to do oil analysis constantly, but once in a while is a good idea to see how things are going. Oil analysis is also great to check for fuel in oil (bad injector) or coolant in oil (bad head gasket or oil cooler).

On the way, B-MAN. The FS2500 is a lot more money and doesn't filter as well as the AMSOIL system. -Chuck

Hi Chuck, I was reading your thread and just had a quick question..is the reason why the oil is by passed @ a rate of 10% due to flow only as to not rob the system of its required flow rate? I imagine the 2 micron filter wouldnt have the same flow as the reg 15-35 micron...all that aside shoot me a pm and a price on everything..I am i Canada but usually have stuff shipped to Port Huron MI vis UPS...Thanx Chuck...GD
