AMSOIL 15w-40 and Ea oil filter. Been thinking about trying the 5w-30, but it's a lot more $$. Thinking hard about adding a by-pass system - toss up between the AMSOIL BMK-25 and the Franz. I think the Franz has better filtration (and costs less), but is messier. I like the spin on filter convenience of the AMSOIL setup.
Used to run Rotella 15w-40, but find the oil consumption is way down with the AMSOIL.
Based on what I have been told anyway I would not run Amsoil 5w30 HDD in your 01 as it was never made to use 5w oil. IIRC you can run 10w30 or 10w40 but they were nor set up to run 5w like the newer engines can. BTW I run 5w30 HDD in my 06 and like it even though it cost more then 15w40.
In all my diesel pickups, dodges, fords, and chevys, I ran John Deere Torque Guard 15-40 with a wix filter when I was farming/ranching. They were run hard and put up wet! Put anywhere from 300,000 to 450,000 on them with no engine problems. Changed oil every 5000 miles. Pick a diesel oil you are comfortable with and a good filter and enjoy your diesel. You may wear out before it does!!
WIX with Valvoline Blue dino for me. Its getting hard for me to find so I may go to Amsoil but I cant decide how long Ill go between changes. I use Amsoil in all my toys and my wifes Acura and really like it. The Acura gained 2 MPG almost instantly.
By the way hikhok what is a Lariat Mega cab???
2006 2500 Lariat Mega cab 5.9L 4x4 (K&N cold air intake, 5" Magnaflow turbo back, Banks High Ram) LET "ER" EAT
WIX and NAPA filters are 35 micron at 98.7% efficiency. These are paper (cellulose) filters.
Fleetguard Stratapore filters are 25 micron at 98.7%.
AMSOIL EaO filters are 15 micron at 98.7%.
AMSOIL EaBP bypass filtration systems are 2 micron at 98.7%.
The MOPAR filter is made by Fleetguard for MOPAR but isn't a Stratapore. It is a 35 micron Fleetguard cellulose filter with a MOPAR paint job.
Baldwin, Napa (WIX), and Fleetguard are filter you cannot go wrong with. Baldwin specializes in filteration for commercial vehicles. Napa filters are actually make by WIX and Wix also is a great filter. And Fleetguard is made by Cummins. As for Motor Oil, if your not going synthetic Chevron Delo or Shell Rotella are the best. Just because Valvoline, Castrol, and Quakerstate make great engine oil for gasoline engines, it does not mean they are the best in diesel engine oil. Most long haul truckers run Delo or Rotella. You can find Rotella and Delo at Walmart for arround 10Bucks a gallon. If your going synthetic, go all the way, go Amsoil. Now Valvoline has the Cummins badge on their oil saying recommended by Cummins, but if you read the fine print its for Cummins ISM & ISX. It does not say anything about ISB witch is the motor in our trucks.

Around here within the span of My 5,000 mile oil changes there will be a pretty decent "on sale" deal between Mobil 1300, or Chevron Delo, Rotella etc and I go with one of those... I make sure it gets a Fleetgaurd Filter which is the "Mopar" filter at My local O'reilly's... As said, I change every 5,000 miles or possibly less and I don't expect to ever have an oil related problem...
How do donaldson oil filters compare to the wix one? Also do u think that running 5w40 is fine in the winter and then switching to 15w40 in the spring?
The ELF3749 filter from Donaldson is one of the best filters on the market, the P-series Donaldson is on par with Wix. I run 0w40 or 5w40 in the winter and 15w40 in the summer and it is fine.
Nominal ratings are next to useless. Most filter manufactures don't seem to want to post their absolute ratings... maybe because they are so poor?
nominal ratings mean only 50% of the particles of that size are captured.
