Plus, propane takes up a lot less room, those CNG tanks are huge looking.

I could be thinking of a different shootout, but in this months issue of DP, they said that they only track the diesel use, not any additives like propane, CNG, or nitrous. I saw an energy density chart, which showed that CNG and propane both hve significantly less energy per unit than diesel. How much CNG was used to achieve that MPG figure would need to be calculated to determine the actual cost per mile.

this is interesting. Subscribing now! I guess, what's the main difference between running CNG and running Propane? They both seem to increase power and MPG, but the propane kits seem like they are about half the cost or less. what is the major advantage of running CNG over propane?

I will be going to Mexico here within about 2 weeks, and i will ask how much it is to install Propane on the truck. There are plenty of trucks that have that over there, just never been tempted to ask. Now I am

the article stated the "diesel" fuel mileage but didn't state how much CNG was being used during the same time. Sure he was getting 38mpg of diesel usage, but no comment of how much CNG was used. The capital required to setup up a truck to run CNG the break even period would be years... and that is if the price of diesel stays high, and CNG stays low.

more info

I've just started researching this, but have found a couple websites. Most of the companys that I have read about are running 80% CNG and 20% #2. As for the strength of the CNG tanks, I found this on Natruell.com's website.

Natruell

It is a video of them testing these CNG tanks. There kits run about $8500 installed with tank and everything. They also will give you $500 for each referral. Some states are giving tax incentives of $2500 or more for the conversion to CNG. They will also give you 12 months no interest and payments.

$8500 !!!! LOL!!! Yeah, that's about 3 times what it should cost you at least!
And the article in the magazine recently was VERY poorly done. I hate when these mags have writers that really don't know what they are doing, or why. It's irresponsible to report the way they do.

Now that Diesel is back to $2.00-2.50 they pay back in years now just about doubles. It seems that its only worth it for people where NG is less than 1/2 the cost of diesel, or unless you are a mad scientist/ experimenter, live on massive NG reserves it is probably not financially viable.

I still have a small free supply of propane....and have most of the parts now, probably easier to install it than to sell it off.

I had a huge post ready and lost it. I will post it later. I can shed a lot of light on this subject. Bottom line for now is that it is expensive, no getting around it. Components should be high grade stainless. Tanks rated at operating pressures of 3600 psi. carry a lot of liability. Especially when used for OTR transportation.
