No Power On Wvo

I just started running WVO and I pull a trailer every day truck and trailer is about 17,000 to 18,000 lb. Here in Tn. we have hills, BIG HILLS and my truck running WVO has no power to pull. Do I need to switch to diesel to pull hills or can I turn up the pump for more power. My truck is stock THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP

yes, if memory serves me correc that motor was rated at 215HP on a good day (could be wrong) you may or may not know that wvo has much less energy content per volume than regular diesel so your truck is way down on power. Does sound like it's about time to turn up the pump or start making other mods, if you intend to pull that load with WVO

WVO has a lower BTU than #2. And a little less cetane.

No. 2 diesel 140,000 48
WVO 130,000 35 to 45

You could dump a little Kero into the WVO to bump up the BTU's.

You may also have a plugged filter????? That's pretty common with WVO especially the first few tanks.

What's your fuel pressure look like? Odds are that is the problem - whether it is from a clogged filter, restricted fuel flow or whatever else - if you don't have a fuel pressure gauge in place, get one.

I run 25psi on diesel and 40psi on WVO. My WVO is160f to 180f and I have heater wire on injector line and it is 240f to 270f at the injector I still thank turning up the pump is best if it will not damag the engine

It is the loss of the cetane that is actually killing the power. The amount of cetane in the fuel determines how fast the burn is within the combustion cylinder. The faster the burn the closer the piston is to the optimum distance for a power stroke. WVO burns so much slower you miss that optimum distance and thus are down on power even though everything is burning. You may want to try a cetane booster if you are worried about messing with the pump.

well you are running WVO so regardless what you are doing you ARE coking up your engine....frying oil was never mean to be burnt so there will be ash deposits made as a result. I am not a second gen guy so I can't tell you the specifics of turning things up a notch hopefully somebody with some 12V knowledge will chime in. You could probably do some reasearch in the 2nd gen powertrain forum to find it yourself.

It's a '97 P-pump, the most bulletproof injection pump of all time. Get a fuel plate and/or slide it forward and/or advance the timing (advanced timing will optimize a fuel with a lower cetane value). As long as you watch a pyrometer you won't hurt the engine with an extra 200 horsepower. Your transmission might get hurt. But, you definitely won't hurt anything if you just tune it to get the same amount of power that you had before.

If the WVO is filtered and de-watered, it's pretty safe; definitely worth the risk. You only need a few thousand miles to pay for a new IP...

can you add water injectoin to clean the coking. . I know water cleans carbon out of gas engines. .How much water will a 5.9 take? .I have added one tank just add a tank, switches, plumping, and clean on the go??

Ok - as long as that is the pressure going to the IP - and not to a filter in front of the IP... I keep an inline filter in front of the IP to make sure I don't get any debris getting through - it's saved me a few times, but at one point it was clogged with a nice polymer coating and although my fuel pressure gauge read 30 psi, that went only to the filter - the pressure after it was barely enough to move the truck. I don't seem to have any power issues - although I've only pulled about a 6k lb trailer with mine.

Hotter fuel is less dense - so that may not work in your favor. A plate, injectors and a pyrometer may be in your future.
