The bad of biodiesel?

Anyone know of any bad thing from running biodiesel? What about is other diesels besides diesel pickups, like VW or Mercedes-Benz?

The biggest problem I can see is quality. If you are handy with a chemistry set then making your own is a good idea. I know I could do it but I don't trust myself and unfortunately I do not have the time to do it either. I purchase my biodiesel, when I run it, from a reputable dealer in Boston. If you plan on running biodiesel all the time an extra fuel filter would be some cheap insurance.

The only real dirty secret is waste product disposal.

This past winter a group of us took our jeeps up into the mountains for a little snow wheeling. A number of us had diesel tow rigs; one of them however was running Biodiesel. At the end of the day the biodiesel powered rig wouldn’t start because the fuel had gelled up on him. It took a lot of work, and a portable shop heater to get his rig off that mountain.

BioD does gell at a lower temp than than #2 Diesel
The waste by product is nasty but once you de-methonal it, it can be used as a fertilzer.
Quality is very important, so make test batches and titrate often.

I have ran 3200 gallons worth thru my Ford 7.3l without any issues.
I run 100% Biod, and once my tank and lines was cleared of #2, I have no filter issues.
In fact I just changed my filter for the first time in a year.
I even ran it dry once. Just poured in some more BioD and purged air form the lines and up and going. No clogged filters, no issues.

Lots of folks have issues simply because they rush making the BioD.
If you are going to make it, take the time to make sure tha tyou are making the best quality fuel possible. Your fuel system alone is like $7000, and then the engine is @$10000, get lazy and you will mess something up. Take you time, test the fuel, and enjoy the fact that you are not giving your money for an Arab product.

The guy who lives next to me was running B50 back in January... I would not have believed it had I not seen it poured in. It was a '04 TDI.

Been doing a LOT of reading since I first read the Diesel Secret thread. Most of what I can glean from all the different methods is that not completely separating water from the fuel is the biggest boo boo. Some have suggested that allowing at least a week for separation, then draining off the water and sediment before processing is a good safeguard. Google "WVO Fuel" and read a lot for yourself. Doesn`t seem to be a problem for VW`s.
