the sammie was running on straight veg oil not biodiesel. for those that don't know, there is a difference. there was a comment earlier also about bio having a lower gell point than #2. That is incorrect. bio will start to gel a lot sooner than #2. at 20 degrees bio is a solid block. i left a 5 gal jug in the cab of my truck and it was an ice cube

Most ever post here has a little truth , and many have wrong statements .
The 1st thing , no matter what the subject is , is that there are very few general statements that work all the time , like is Bio OK with brand X engine , the problem lies with the changes over time in how brand what ever is being made ie. Cummins , fuel pumps , VE pump - P pump - VP pump , CP3 pump , each pump has its issues , it seems that as they evolve , they are less tolerant of multiple / alt fuels .
As simple as pre 94 , most trucks & cars had more rubber in the hoses & seals , the bio makes mush out of rubber over time .
The same concept with the processing of oil/fats into bio diesel , every thing that has life , plant & animal has oils/fats , they all differ , before getting into bio , I thought that olive oil was the best , from just using for cooking , then one day I ended up buying a bottle of canola oil because it was cheap , put in RV , saw that the olive oil got cloudy long before the canola oil by about 25*F , then with all the research on the bio , also found all kinds of difference in volume , quality ect .
The point being , is that there are very few statements that fit all applications .
I would have to say that with all the different things out there and the cost of buying , fixing , maintaining our trucks & cars , that your should make decisions on the conservative side = do not jump with both feet into any rumor your hear [ your truck will run good on , what ever ] .
With that being said , I would have to say stay away from anything in a can/bottle that makes all kinds of promises , as an example DSE .
Next is only bio diesel , oils that are processed to remove the triglycerides , using WVO -waste vegi oil , SVO - straight vegi oil , the 2 tank systems , heating up to switch from dyno to WVO , the reason being that the glycerins have trouble burning completely if at all depending on circumstances , this is creating coking in engine and other issues .
This is all just meant to inform , there are believers out there that may want to argue , but that is not the point , the point is an exchange of information , then you can take what ever chances you want .
I do watch the canon fodder [ those that are out front , that show where not to go ] , I have read many say that they are going to the alternate fuels , that I do not , and getting many miles out of it , but there is a lack of studies as compared to bio diesel , so they are unproven for betting may trucks & cars on .
A good site for making your own .

I forget which issue but the Dieselpower mag said that the old mecedes were actually one of the best engines to run biodiesel through.

i run my my homemade biodiesel in 3 of my mercedes and they run the best on it i think. mileage isnt hurt and power isnt hurt. the mercedes engines are like small tanks you cant kill them. plus the injection pump is oil cooled so the oil gets heated up a little bit. plus the lift pumps are mechanical and they dont draw that much fuel. they run smoother and quieter. the ive run it in a rabbit and soon to be jetta and i think they will run just fine. but they are more sensitive to temperature the VW that is. my jetta jells even with #2 in the winter temps. so the jetta wont get 100% till 70deg constant plus.

There is alot of bad info on the internet and even in this thread. I recommend buying and reading these two books to understand biodiesel, the processes to make it, SVO, and what to do with waste streams.

From the Fryer to the Fuel Tank - Josh Tickell

Biodiesel Basics and Beyond. A Comprehensive Guide to Production and Use for the Home and Farm - William H. Kemp

Tex, pm me if you would like my phone number and I can answer most of your question on the phone, alot easir to talk in person.

6 months to a year if you don't use a biocide algea killer. Not much different than #2. if #2 sits for a while it too will grow algea. besides, who ever has spare fuel just sitting around in storage for that long?

I purchased the 'Biodiesel Homebrew Guide' from Maria "Mark" Alovert. Its a very informative book but written in laymen's terms so its easy to understand. I believe she is one of the pioneers in the BD arena. Basically its a how-to guide from start to finish. I think it was only $15-$20. Her email on the front of the guide is Alovert@b100.org. Definitely helped me wade thru all the biodiesel info out there.
