Need pump for used motor oil
I'm posting this in all the forums I frequent, hoping someone will get a laugh and maybe have a good pump they can recommend: Hi all, I need some help here. I have discovered that pumping some used motor oil through a 9 micron filter apparently requires The Pump Of Jesus, or at least permission from Himself. Here's why I say that: I obtained 20 gallons of used motor oil in an ordinary metal drum. I had a 12v pump, removed from a coolant flushing machine, that has pumped plenty of diesel fuel successfully. I attempted to use it to pump used motor oil. It pumped approximately 1/2 gallon of oil, then began cycling off and on. I suspect this was from overheating. So, I put it away and let it cool down for about 36 hours-a day and a half. Surely that would be sufficient, right? I mean, when it overheated at first, that was in the blazing sun, with our normal 60,000 degree F outside temperatures. I tried it again this morning, in the shade and before it got hot. Nope-it twitched once and never moved again. So, I went and pulled a much larger 120v pump brand new out of the box. Now, this wonder of engineering was brought to us by our friends in China. It comes with no power cord or fittings. I went to home depot and obtained both a suitable power cord and the fittings necessary to make my hoses work with the pump. The moment of truth was at hand! I plugged it in, and...nothing. Not so much as a twitch from China's finest. Double checking my wiring connections against the diagram showed that I had indeed connected it correctly. I verified that the extension cord had power by plugging a fan into it, which worked fine. I'd had enough at this point, and I at least wanted to salvage my $6 power cord. So, I grabbed the cord, unplugged it, and swung the pump down into the concrete of the driveway. The second time was the charm-out of the pump came the cord, and the pump went off in approximately 6 directions. Into the garbage can the pieces went, and my fine cord lived to fight another day. I ask this: Is there any pump you guys know of that can handle the amazingly difficult task of pumping some used motor oil? At this point I don't care if it's 12v or 120v, I just want something that will work. Here's a list of things I DO NOT want in a pump: 1. It can't generate the pressure required to push some used oil through a 9 micron filter. It is a FILTER, not a block of concrete. It should not require 6000 hp of pumping power so simply push some oil through. 2. It can't pull oil up even 1 foot and self prime. Folks, if it needs 500 psi at the INLET to get the stupid thing to work, it's worse than useless. I say worse because it makes you think you have a pump, when in fact you do not. 3. It can't overheat at the drop of a hat. Again, we're not pumping dry gravel through a subatomic particle-sized hole. If a match being struck in India causes it to immediately shut off and burst into flames here in Montgomery, Alabama, I don't need it. HERE'S WHAT I NEED: A pump that will simply pump. No drama, no retardation required-just a pump that pumps. That's it. Please tell me that this is something the human race has in fact succeeded in producing. I'll be eternally grateful if I can simply get a pump. *Note: DO NOT BUY ANY POWER TOOLS FROM HARBOR FREIGHT. This is the second power tool I've bought from them. The first was a chopsaw, and it did better than the pump. It ran for approximately 40 seconds before quitting forever. I'm not exaggerating-that's exactly what happened. I suspect the Chinese have a plot to destroy America. Not through war, but by taking our scrap metal and recycling it into cheap power tools that don't work. Eventually, if there are enough of them littering our landscape, nothing will get done because no tool will work. Also, all the broken pumps and chopsaws will puncture all our tires, and our CTD's won't be able to travel far. They'll still run of course, at least as long as we don't replace our fuel station pumps with Chicago Electric models from China. But, flat tires will prevent them from being driven. Can you tell I'm slightly irritated?

I have been doing some research for replacing my Pre-luber pump. The Shur-Flo 2088-343-435 available from Northern tool for around $75 seems to do well with hot engine oil. may are using them in their home made Pre-luber set-ups. they are the exact same pump as others are selling for $165+ with different lables on them. Best of luck: Bob, 92 ram 250 |

I use a gravity system, 5 gallon can with a flange added to the bottom: ![]() Then the WMO drains through these two filters: ![]() It takes about an hour or two for the oil to drain thru on a warm day. Left filter is 10 micron. right filter is 2 micron with a magnet attached. The slower the oil goes thru the filter, the more crap will be filtered out. Ops
