Black Oil

Just wondering if anybody else has this problem. I just changed the oil went to a sythetic 5-40 and the oil is still black as the ace of spades. My CTD is an 06 megacab 5.9 HO totally stock with 50,000km. Am I missing out on a step here? I would assume that the oil should be clean looking for at leaste 5000km or so.. any ideas??

The oil turns black real fast., it don't take long. I've heard it gets black even faster on the newer trucks.

Perfectly normal for the 04.5 and newer trucks. Even worse on the new 6.7.

My oil will be black in about 10 miless after an oil change. UOA still shows low insolubles though. I have not had an uoa since I switched to shaeffer's supreme 9000 5w-40. So we'll see if the syn comes back as good.

WOW That is crazy I was thinking it was a issue with poor filtration or non combusted fuel. Is there a way to decrease this? Is there a trick to getting the black crud from the bottom of the oil pan afrter draining it .. or is this a non issue..

Thanks for all of your feed back.. This forum has been a great resource for me.

The newer diesels are like that. Whenever they started adding the 3rd injection event I believe. IIRC it started with common rail.

My `97 was just as bad as my `06. Ten minutes and it looks like it was never changed.

A bypass filter may help since they filter much finer than standard oil filters. You're seeing soot loading. Also, since you switched from conventional to synthetic, you may be seeing a quicker black color due to the synthetic oil cleaning out the sludge inside your engine that has been deposited from conventional oil use. Mopar oil filters are a paper (cellulose) filter made by Fleetguard for Mopar and are rated at 35 micron. Fleetguard Stratapore filters use a synthetic filter media and are rated at 25 micron. AMSOIL Ea filters are rated at 15 micron, and most bypass systems are rated between 2 and 3 microns. The particles that do the most wear in your engine over time are between 7 and 12 micron. This include soot loading from fuel combustion.

I run an AMSOIL Bypass Filtration system on my '02.

Totally normal! Even with a 2 micron bypass filter it's black right away. The black is the sub-micron soot particles that even the bypass system doesn't get. On the good side, Chuck and I get the benefit of a much better filter straining out the most damaging 3-10 micron particles that do most of the damage.

No worries. That shows that the oil is doing its job of suspending the soot, and not letting it settle out in the oil pan and other places forming sludge. You could do a couple of flushes with fresh oil, but it won't do any good.
