AMSOIL - 409,000-Mile Oil Drain Interval Mack Engine Teardown

And regular Rotella was run a million miles in a Peterbilt with only bypass filtration and makeup oil added (just as done with the Amsoil)...that engine only needed new rings to bring it back into near new specs...

It basically boils down to this: Today's oils are not the same as those your father ran. They are very close in quality, and as long as regular maintenance is done, any will serve well. Especially in a Cummins that is extremely easy on oil to begin with. And regardless of the "grade" of oil, the quality/protection gap between conventional oils and synthetics is narrowing at an increasingly rapid rate. Especially with the intro of the CJ-4 oil specification.

I've heard that the CJ4 oil is not as good as the CI4 or CI4+ oils. The CJ4 spec was established to keep from compromising the new emissions controls on 2007 and newer engines (those with particulate filters). The additive package in the CJ4 oil is really a compromise and not as good as the previous additive packages. At least that's what I've read in at least a couple of different diesel magazines.

Well since we are on the oil talk...what do ya'll think about the Lucas HD oil additive?? It advertises easier, safer and better start-ups since it is a "sticky" kina lube...it helps on start up and such. Anyone else use this?? Any better, safer or more reliable to use as a oil additive than adding 2-cycle as a fuel additive? I know different sides of the engine...but just makes me wonder!!!

I now have over 700,000 on my 90 model nothing goes under my hood but rotella I can run 4,000 pulling hard. and will not use enough oil to require adding any. it will lose about 1 quart. I'm not saying synthetics aren't better they may be But I am saying I don't feel I need any better. :thumbsup

And while the additive packages "look" depleted, I believe they are using different "stuff" as additives that cannot be easily discerned when compared to an older oil...couple that with the fact that most of the diesel we are running is ULSD... I think that CJ-4, coupled with the use of ULSD, is quite good.

I have UOAs on CJ-4 Rotella that look as good as any other oil...wear metals aren't any higher than even those I've seen running synthetics.

Lucas Oil Stabilizer is thought to be nothing more than a thickener...and in the modern world of oils, thicker does not equal better.

I ran the recommended mix of Lucas and Rotella one time, the valve noise was so bad in my 99 that I ran it less than 500 miles. I drained it for straight Rotella...noise went away.

It is the base stocks that are lacking with CJ-4 oils to allow DPF equipped trucks to meet emissions. TBN numbers on UOA tend to be lower when comparing similar CI-4+ and CJ-4 oils. If you don't have a DPF system (6.7 Cummins) you are getting a better oil if you can find CI-4+ spec oils. That's why I continue to use (and sell more of) the AMSOIL AME and HDD oils that are CI-4+ and NOT CJ-4.

That Lucas oil additive looks like bar and chain lube when you pour it. Very think and sticky like molasses. I wouldn't use it in anything other than a Husky.

If your looking for the 2 stroke that's it. Make sure it says "ashless" on the bottle. I know there is some synthetic oils that you don't want to burn.

I found this article while doing a search on google for CI-4 oil. I don't know if it is biased or not because I'm not that familar with some of the other diesel sites in the internet, but I did think it might be interesting.

My truck is modded and smokes more then stock.. I'm not on it all the time but it happens. Oil analysis is kind of a pain to do and is just another step. I am hesitant to run synthetic 8-10 so I am thinking of running conventional agian because Synthetic is getting costly every 5-6k. What do you guys think about the soot levels? My Oil is always black and has been since new. Where would I get analysis done?
