I used Rotella once or twice....I prefer Delo 400, or Mobile Delvac 1300, or Valvoline Premium Blue

Everybody has different opinions on oil - as long as it has the proper API rating it should be good. Of course, there are small differences between the brands as they all use different additives.

Shell Rotella the first 20-30,000 mile then changed over to Royal Purple. I've used it in alot of different engines of the years with very good results. I'm waiting to get a few more miles on the truck then going to get it tested. I'll let ya'll know how it goes... BTW I change the filter every 4 - 5,000 miles and in the past have gone as far as 20,000 on the oil.

Oh and Mobs I've seen about a 1-2mpg increase on the highway to.

I used Rotella and then switched to Delo...doesn't seem to smell as much as Rotella. Anyway, I have been changing my oil right around 6000 miles...but never over! Never had any bad analysis results yet. The fuel filter I change about every 12 to 24k...depends on what I am doing (towing, farming, etc.) I admit, I should also add a fuel guage....but I just have not done it.

Here's a theory. Whether or not you go conventional or synthetic is your choice. This might start something, but here goes. Filters help eliminate particulate matter......SOLIDS. They dont remove fuel contamination/dillution. There is no way to eliminate blowby. You can minimize it, but not eliminate it. CLEAN oil is what you want. If you change it often. It's minimized. You have clean oil. The synthetic oil may not break down as fast but it does get dilluted. For about 7-8 years. I was an engine builder. I've seen the effects of non-frequent and frequent oil changes. My friend had a early 90s cummins that had somewhere in the neighborhood of 425,000 miles. It had some cylinder wear when we took the head off for a valve job. But NOTHING like I had seen in others with a couple hundred thousand miles less on them. He changes his oil religiously at 3000 miles with the good old Delo 400. Im SOLD ON IT! Thats my logic. Im always open to new things, but to me this is gospel. Let the debate begin. I know there is a LOT of experience and knowledge on this forum. I can only hope to learn what many have forgotten..

im a ford tech, and that theory goes for all motors......late 1800's to presant, gas or diesel. people want to "go longer" by running synthetics.....but A. the filter is plugged and no matter what the current viscosity of the oil, its unfiltered after the filter life is over, and B. dilluted oil, no matter what the fuel, does not lube as well.....so i applaud your post......people should really look closely at this and not buy into the "longer oil change interval" that a synthetic supposidly gives........Marc

Extended Oil Changes

I would assume that anyone smart enough to change their oil, also posseses the brain power to change the oil filter. For conversation sake, take a look at this link from an AMSOIL direct jobber regarding extended changes and proper filtration. http://www.performanceoiltechnology....dgecummins.htm
The bottom line here is...To Each His Own! Changing your oil is ALWAYS a good thing! Changing it more than you need to is a waste of time, money and energy! As for me, at 20,000 it's 15W-40 AMSOIL Synthetic with a dual bypass filter and sample testing every 5,000!

I agree. To eash his own......As far as wasting time, energy and money? How much is peace of mind worth?
Here is another question. How much does that oil change cost for the Amsoil and filter setup with periodic testing cost? Im honestly curious.
I buy a case of Mopar filters for $80 and a case of Delo 400 for $42 at good old Costco. Without breaking out a calculator I figure about $28 bucks for an oil and filter change for me. And about 15 minutes for the labor. Im not independantly wealthy, but thats cheap to me for the peace of mind I get. I also know of a guy with a Cummins Pusher motorhome that does the amsoil thing and tests it. That thing has around 40 some thousand miles and he has never changed the oil. Just the filters and HE SAYS the tests say it doesnt need changing. HMMMMMM?

I figure I spend about $50 per oil change using Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme and Fleetguard filters, then have each change tested at another $20 a pop. Money is not my concern. I'm all about piece of mind as well.

Not one of my lifetime goals involve continuing this argument, but...are you questioning the results of oil analysis? :fist: Over a span of 25,000 miles, I'll spend about $80 less by running an oil analysis every 5,000 miles, using the Donaldson Endurance filter and AMSOIL 15W-40. As you said Greaseburner, if it's just the money, we wouldn't be driving these $40K trucks! The Oil Analyzers Inc. test costs $15.20 a throw plus postage. I'm paying $5.63 a quart for the 15W-40 AMSOIL Heavy Duty Synthetic.

Thanks for engaging me in this discussion, but a guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do! I just purchased 3 gallons of Delo 4000 for my last "dino" oil change during break-in and if I'm not satisfied long term with the AMSOIL performance, I'll be buying more! Only time will tell! I think the longest threads on any diesel site are discussions about the "best" oil or synthetic to use and why, but it all comes down to personal preference and past experience. We can just agree to disagree. Best of luck!
