royal purple oil

I know a alot here and other diesel sites run Amsoil 15w-40 or 5w-40. But is anyone beside me using royal purple? I been using this stuff for about 8yrs with no problems to date. I use / used it in everything from my 98 T/A LS1, 01 GMC gas truck, 2 buddys Cummins, 1 PSD, 3 D-maxs, etc... I not trying to sell this stuff, but I had a hard time finding Amsoil with out ordering it or driving 1hr or so to get. Royal purple is made just outside Houston so most auto parts store have it around here. I'm really just posting this in case someone seen it but never knew anyone using it. I use 10w-30 in gas engines and 15w-40 in diesels. Here's the link if anyone want to search it more.

I have heard and read that some people swear by it. It is supposed to be some great stuff. There are some 55 gallon barrels of it at a local paper mill that is used in the production equipment.

I going to try to get a oil analysis from the 03 in my sig and 1 from a D-max soon both using RP. I'll post results as soon as I can.

I would do a little research before running it in the 6 speed - last time I checked, the viscosity is a little low when compared to Redline MTL. You might at least want to check that out for yourself.

I'm going to change over my differentials and transfer case to the Royal Purple cause I do think it's a very good oil but as far as the engine, I can't seem to justify spending the $85.00 every 5,000 miles. I used to use the Rotella-T, non-synthetic then switched to the Valvoline Premium Blue 15W40 and it made a WORLD of difference. The engine is much smoother on cold mornings and my oil is now staying CLEAN!!! Not to mention, Advanced Auto Parts sells it for $7.97 a GALLON. And some guys will point to being able to go longer intervals with a synthetic but the Premium Blue has been tested in fleets using Cummins engines up to 65,000 miles between intervals. To me, there's no reason to spend the extra just to drain it out. I have 2 uncles that are past the 500,000 mile mark on their Cummins changing it every 5,000 religiously, so to me that speaks volumes. Just my $.02

If the soot isn't in the oil, where is it? Actually, the purpose of the detergent/dispersant component of the oil's additive package is to carry the soot in suspension until the oil is drained, so "black oil" is doing its job.

Now, if the soot isn't in the oil, it must still be in the engine where it will manifest itself as deposit buildup.

Yes, I understand what you're saying and I'm not saying that it's perfectly clean, it's become increasingly darker with increasing mileage, but it's got a dispersive polymer that aids to break down the soot BEFORE it's held in suspension. So, the end result is still getting the soot out of the engine at oil change time, but less restriction on the oil filter. I know that it was developed specifically with the cooled EGR type engine (i.e. Cummins ISB like ours) because of the high temps in this engine that can break down
"normal" oils. And, even if the oil is "dirty" and appears to be doing it's job, if it's also very thin, it can also be a sign of thermal breakdown. I noticed that with the Rotella, my oil was dirty and thin, didn't feel like oil usually does. The Premium Blue even when darker still has an oil-like feel. And, I'm not knocking the Royal Blue by any means. I just don't think it's cost efficient to spend that much more on something that's going to be discarded anyway. Now, the diffs and transfer case are a different story. With the intervals between maintenance on those components, the Royal Purple is definitely something worth putting in.

The 5.9L Cummins as used in our Dodge trucks does not use EGR - yet!
