There are a lot of options as well as snake oil out there. And I couldn't find a really up to date post, so I thought I would start a new discussion.
Now I don't want the add 100hp additive. I just want to take the best care of my truck that I can, I don't think I'll be getting rid of my 06.
I'd like to exceed Cummins Standards.
So what have you guys found best for oil to use as well as what weight.
Best oil and fuel filters and or systems(bypass ect). From what I have read Fleetguard for oil and Baldwin for fuel. Any part numbers would be awesome.
Then what additives are you guys running? I know the CommonRail injectors need lubed?
Oil - highly debated, I say just pick the prettiest jug that says diesel.
Filter - best filters would be aftermarket spinons, Baldwin 1212 and CAT 1r-750 or 1r-749 are popular
Fuel additives - highly debated and CRs don't need lube but some run it. 2stroke oil (+ some ATF every now and then) is popular from what I've read. I just tried 2SO + ATF 1 quart each on an 03 and it did make it idle smoother and slightly quieter.
I know a lot of this stuff is 6 to one then half dozen to the other. Just wanted to see people's opinions, and their reasons: my main thing is the filters. I was running AFE oil and fuel. And they changed their fuel to where it isn't a water seperation anymore. And haven't been overly impressed with the oil filter reading I have done. Looking for the highest flowing, best filtering.
I run fleetguard filters.. they are good filters. I wish I had the equipment to test the flow of each one just to post up real results with pictures nonethless.
As far as oil, I run delo 400. But I am changing soon to Schaeffers. It is probably the best oil money can buy. You will see on the Internet where people have used it in million mile engines and when they tear it apart, the bores and crankshaft and piston all look brand new. The stuff works, but it's 100 bucks just for oil if you use it.. it ain't cheap.
As far as fuel additives go. I add two stroke oil just because it does quiet down MY injectors and the added lubrication can't hurt the CP3 and any other under-high-pressure moving part.
I will be running archoil ar6200?, in my fuel once I get some. It does ACTUALLY make the fuel burn cleaner. People with DPFs that run it see a lot less regeneration and other fuel/soot related issues in those picky things they call new trucks. I can't say it adds MPG or any other benefit. It might make cold starts better because it causes the fuel to burn better/at a lower temp.
How much and how often do you add the 2 Stroke oil?
I've been running Schaeffers 15W-40 sense I bought the truck (2 years ago, 50,000miles.
All the fluid( short of the brake fluid) has been changed with Schaeffers.
It is good stuff, have heard good things about Amsoil.
What's your Fleetguard oil number? From looking around there is more then one kind?
I just did 1 quart 2SO per full tank then after highway driving for 30 minutes I noticed it was idling smoother and slightly quieter. Now, how much of it is the 2SO vs the ATF cleaning out the system I can't tell you as I still have over 1/2 a tank in so it will be a while before I can say.
I've ran a few tanks of 1 qt ATF and 1 qt 2SO and noticed the same thing as you. Also cleared up a slight miss/skip at idle. I just run the 2SO now and will use the ATF if it starts acting up again.
I'm uber paranoid about sounds and abnormal exhaust smoke and I strongly believe this worked for my truck.
I'm an Amsoil dealer, so of course I'm going to say Amsoil for all filters, oils, and treatments! Lol. I'm very pleased with my S&B CAI. There's absolutely no dust inside the intake tube on a white glove test. I ran Delo until I became a dealer of Amsoil and I can say that after studying the lubrication stuff, synthetic is the way to go for the long haul. Amsoil and a few others have better additives than shelf brands from local parts stores that actually extend drain intervals and protect the engine better. Bypass systems have proven their worth in many different studies by different sources. Hard to dispute 2 micron filtration. The Cummins engine in a Dodge is probably plagued most by poor filtration of the fuel. I've recently been having fuel related issues and found out that Cummins and Bosch recommended 2 micron filtration on the fuel and Chrysler so graciously decided 10 micron was sufficient. I just added an Airdog with 2 filters and one is a 2 micron. Fuel treatment I've found out recently as well from injector pump failure in my welding machine, Kubota, and injectors in my truck that it's absolutely necessary with this crappy ULS fuel we get now. ALL of my fuel for the past couple months gets treatment added. Costs too much not to. Good synthetic oils, best filters possible on everything, treatment in fuel and it should last a really long time.

Since no one has brought it up, the correct 2 stroke oil is the TCW3 super tech Walmart brand stuff. The TCW3 is ashless, which us necessary for this application.
The archoil AR6200 fuel additive does do a couple things. It separates water entrained in the fuel, it adds some lubricity and helps the quality of the fuel. You can put the stuff in gas or diesel. It also preserves gas for those that store things and don't want to drain the tanks.
I'll see what I find for the fleetguard filters I mentioned. I get mine on amazon typically.
Mvweld4u, what fuel additives do you run and why, what oil weight are you running in your 5.8? And if you don't mind me asking what is in the Amsoil over Schaeffers? I know Schaeffers has that moly film. And after talking with a friend gasser engine builder he said tho run delo 15w40 in this new motor because of the zinc content. I was talking with another gentleman and he was saying that oil on the big box shelves have additives taken out, like in Royal Purple. If you buy from an industrial oil supplier you get the original stuff? Is that what Schaeffers and Amsoil has going on sense they are through dealers?
I read a couple other forums last night, would you guys say skip running the ATF and just run 2 Cycle?
I'll look into some of the Archoil, from reading it sounds legit.
I'm not familiar with Schaeffers oil at all other than that it is a premium synthetic. I would say it's possibly comparable to Amsoil. The zinc content question is a great one. Amsoil has a couple lines of oil that you need to tell your engine builder friend about. It's for classic cars and racing engines and contains the added zinc that is needed. Amsoil doesn't just offer a one size fits all. There's several different grades of oil and products for almost any application. Personally in my 5.9 I run the 15w-40 Heavy Duty Marine & Diesel oil. There's also a 5w-40 Diesel oil that if you're in colder climates would possibly be a better choice. The additives in Amsoil also give it what is referred to as cling factor that actually keeps the oil somewhat stuck to metal parts in times where an engine is sitting for long periods of time without running and prevents dry startup. The difference in synthetic vs conventional dinosaur oil is simple, imagine picking up a handful of sand and a handful of ball bearings of the same size. This is the difference in molecules when looking at the 2 under a microscope. My personal opinion, I think Schaeffers is a great oil, but I have seen no comparisons to other oils to know this. Amsoil just offers a premium product for all sorts of applications and price ranges that make it a good choice for most anyone. Oh yeah, fuel additives! I'm now running Amsoil Diesel Injector Clean and Cetane Boost in all my fuel and Cold Flow Improver throughout the winter months. This fuel treatment regimen goes for my welding machine and tractor as well. Gasoline engines get stabilizer in small engines every fill up and gasoline autos get P.I. Performance Improver every 3,500-5,000 miles. I also run Amsoil filters where they offer them.

Schaeffers doesn't use zinc. They use MOS2. Which I think is better. ZDDP is a great lubricant, but I believe that MOS2 has a higher PSI rating than ZDDP. It sticks to everything like gorilla glue as well.
You can't go wrong with either, but if it were my money, Schaeffers is going in my vehicle. And it will! But the choice is anyones.
I'm looking for that information on Amsoil now. I'm thinking that the zinc formulation is only used in the Z-rod line and maybe the motorcycle oil. Not sure about the Dominator racing oil, but I think it's something different than zinc.

So is the MOS2 the "moly". We have a local dealer and we cha once in a while. And he's told me about bearing tests he's done.
From what I'm reading for stock set ups it looks like Baldwin BD7317 and Fleetguard LF9028 are the best self contained bypass Oil Filters, screw right into place of the stock oil filter. Best Non Bypass looks like Fleetguard Stratapore 16035.
Fuel filter looks like hands down Baldwin PF7977, with a 5 micron filter rating. Where Fleetguard and the rest are at 7-10 micron ratings.
Am I on track with this thinking?
Would anyone know the difference/benefit to running 2 Stroke Oil vs Lucas Fuel Treatment?
I am a fan of "regular maintenance". I still use the Mopar filters and never thought of moving to another filter. I guess as time goes on and miles add up I will switch. I still use Rotella at regular maintenance times! Its seems to be working. My Grocery Getter only has 44K and its a 12 Mega deleted! Between my train horns mounted underneath, my plans to get a Titan Tank (mounted Underneath) and the Amsoil Oil bypass which would be mounted underneath I am going to run out of room!
