Canadian Oil Sands?
Anybody working in this industry? I have been looking into some welding jobs in Fort McMurray. I hold ASME welding certifications and I have been trying to find out if they hold any clout against the Alberta ranking system. And just trying to get some basic info about the general area and nature of work and wages. If any of you have any info for me I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm pretty sure you will need a Interprovincial Red Seal ticket to work their as a Journeyman. It sure is a long way to go for a job!!! Oh yea, bring a trailer if you do because you won't find anywhere to live!!

Shane, Don't know specifically anything about welding, but I fly guys in and out of McMurray all the time because there is a SEVERE lack of housing. If you are lucky enough to even find a place to stay there, you will be spending big bucks on rent. Plan on at least $2000/month on rent for anything livable. No question there is lots of money to be made there, but you will need it if you plan on having a place in McMurray. That's why the big oil companies are spending lots of money flying workers in and out from Calgary and Edmonton among other places.

I've been working up here (FFM) for the past 3yrs, there's plenty of work, it seems like someones always looking for a good welder. I don't know much about the housing situation, I live outside of Edmonton and the company I work for foots the bill for my housing here in FMM, either in Hotels or camps. Besides that and the tickets you'll need I hope you have no adversion to the cold weather coming from Florida...It's warm today at -24*C but hasn't got much above -30*C in the last two weeks...

Yea, I have read about lack of housing. Honestly from what I gather cost of living is about the same here in Florida where I live. Rent on a 2/3 pretty new is from $1,200 -$2,000 here depending on what your view of the golf course is lol! I know its a long way to go but for a journeymen your talking 2-3 times more then I make here and I make good money for here. I can get a trailer if I need to which is what I would probly do. I have looked at some job postings with companies saying they would pay for relocation and find you somewhere to live. I am really curious to see if my welding certifications are transferrable. The economy here is really weak. I was looking into putting in 5 years min up there and then likely coming back. I dont know if I could put up with all the Canadians though! LOL! Thats a joke guys dont flame me.

Last year my company rented 2 apartment in town, a 2 bedroom which was $6300 a month with a 6 month lease and a 3 bedroom which was just over $9000 month to month,...the Hotel I lived in for most of the summer (Sawridge) was $220 a night ($6G a month)...Even guys i know living in trailers are paying huge coin for a place to park it, there are some who outlaw it (find a spot a just park) in the bush though for free in the summer...best bet IMHO is to find and rent a place in Edmonton for your time out or a company to work for that will look after your working/living accommodations. Also the majority of the work up here takes place in the winter. We have allot of guys from elsewhere who come out here and just work for us for the winter then go home for the summers.

NOT FAHRENHITE 0 deg C = 32 FAR & -24 C = -11 F that is a typical winter day; spring & summers in northern Alberta you can expect 50-80 deg F
