anyone own or work for a gun shop?

am looking for a youth model 20 ga automatic shotgun for my 9 year old son. we only shoot trap; however I would like to be able to change the chokes if we did decide to go on a real bird hunt. he is currently using a Mossberg .410 505 pump youth. I think the LOP is around 13-14". this is a little too long. I am not opposed to having the stock cut to reduce the LOP. He also needs more DAC and DAH as the Mossberg is not enough. I was looking at the beretta 391 youth; however that may be a little more than I am willing to put into a gun for a 9 year old. I am looking to purchase the gun in time for him to use it next weekend at the range.

Sorry I didn't make it down Sunday, we ended up working later on Saturday to finish, but it was to late to call. You can try Marks outdoors in B'ham, he has a good selection of used shotguns, unless he is a big 9 year old, most will need to be cut down to fit. I'm not the expert, my son started at about your sons age shooting clays with me, I picked up a used Smith and Wesson 20 gauge and had it cut down, LOP and barrel length to 24" with the chokes reinstalled in the shorter barrel, professionally done, about a week and a half until it was back and it still needed tweeking to fit right. He out grew it real quick, less than a year, growth spurt, the mods ruined the value of the gun, S&W parts are a little hard to find. I picked up a 11/87, 12 ga with chokes as his next gun, been shooting it since, he's 22 now, and would hate to try and count the number of shells he shot through it. It's wore out!! If I had it to do over, I would buy a 12 ga, 1100 or 11/87 a cheap stock to cut down, and factory short barrel and kept the original stock and 28" until he grew. Loaded him a 7/8 oz to 1 oz light loads that barely cycled the action until he grew, essentually a 20 ga kick in a 12 ga. Used Remington parts are alot cheaper than most others. That's my .02, if you look around you can find a good deal on a youth model, but you need a good stock person to get it right, I don't know of many in Alabama. Up this way, Mark's had a good one and Richard Patty at Shotgun Sports in Anniston are the only places/people I know to recommend for stock work, ask the folks at the gun club who they would recommend down your way. Do ya'll shot every Sunday? I like visiting other clubs to shoot, I don't compete, just like to break a target every every once and a while.

i used to shoot 3 or 4 days a week until the club i was at went private. i couldnt afford the 2000.00 membership per year then have to pay per round and the shells. I have gotten back into it now that my son wants to go. I am hoping to get my daughter into it next. Thats why i am looking for a gun made in Italy. they tend to kick less and last longer. i guess we are going to start going every sat and sun that it doesnt rain and is above 60 degrees. you are more than welcome to join us, as is anyone that shows up. i think i enjoy watching my son shoot more that shooting.

Have you looked into any Franchi shotguns? They are owned by berretta and make a good selection of semi-autos. They are well made and very light. My dad is an avid grouse hunter and he loves his franchi 20g. I have shot skeet with it a few times and was pretty impressed with its handling. Its fairly reasonable as far as price goes. It has interchanglable choke tubes as well.

i think that is what i am going to try and find. i am by no means a shotgun guru. it looks like the Benelli Montefeltro and the Franchi 720 youth are the same gun. now i am being told that neither is gas operated and will kick a lot more. now i am thinking maybe a tristar youth, its gas operated but made in turkey, i have a personal issue with that. however; it is only 399.99 and he is going to out grow it in a year. this sucks. i dont want to buy a gun i wouldnt shot, but dont want to spend 1100.00 on a gun for a 9 year old. what would you guys do?
