Earl

My 3500 diesel will not start without teasing the fuel pump a couple of times and using a tiny bit of starting fluid. Is this a bad fuel pump? ( 98 )

Is it a 12v or 24v? Have you changed the filter? Do you have fuel pressure at the injection pump? IN 1998 there was still the 12v p7100 engine being put in the early trucks. The late portion of that year had the 24v vp44 engine. We need alittle more info please.

Fill out your signature, too.

It is a 24v system and my fuel filter/water discharge line is designed like the 99-2000 models. I don't about pressure at the injector pump but it runs well once it starts. I left truck and manuel at work for the weekend.

This is my first time with the forum - what exactly is a signature???

Go to the top right where it says "welcome Earl" and click private messages. A new page will come up, and to the right you will see control panel and under it you will see edit signature. What you type there will appear under your posts. Just like under mine. I think you get about 3 lines.

As far as help.... You can turn the key to crank and let go before it cranks, you should here a buzzing coming from the lift pump right before the fuel filter. This is a priming trick that will run the pump for 30 sec without the engine running. You can crack open the bango bolt at the injection pump to see if you have pressure. You really need a gauge cause it could come out but once you tighten the bolt back up it might not have positive pressure. If you have no buzz your pump is dead, do not drive the truck, this will cause permanent $$$$$$$$ damage. You can also try this trick....... Turn the key to "on" and back off 3 times real quick without cranking. This might show any codes stored in the computer. Write them down and post em up if you have any.
