Grounding Problem

The problem I have is about every three months I need to re-clean the grounds due to the eratic overdrive shifting problem. My truck has the sweet life, hardly any pulling or racing, just driven daily. I thoroughy clean each ground (not that they are dirty to begin with) and put a protectant on them when I'm done, but sure as the sun rise, about every three months the trans. will shift in/out of overdrive. Alt. is good (tried the fuse trick), and apps is newer (was not replaced because of o/d problem).I am kinda lost.

No, terminals are as clean as the rest but I still clean them anyways. All the electrical wires are in very good shape as well.

why not just add another new 0[ought] or 1 heavy ground cable from the transmission to frame. keep in mind that the aluminum that bolt goes thru the trans can corroed.just make a good connection. that should last for a couple of years. jim e.

Krrz,

Ex has a point. You can add multiple grounds connecting everything. Use the compound from an electrical supply company that is made for lugging aluminum wire. This slows the corrosion associated with connecting to aluminum.

I would also use a copper compound on the steel to steel contacts.

You might have a GOOD automotive electrical shop check your truck for over charging and/or AC bleeding through the DC charging system.

It is very weird that you are having to clean so frequently. You may want to think about what you are cleaning with (could it clean, but then leave a residue that creates another round of oxidation on the terminals?) or the chemicals that you have in the air or drive through.

Gray connectors near right side battery.
Reposition alt. wiring and make ground fron alt housing to right side battery.
May have corrosion inside a cable. Look for swelling and green canker.

Thanks to all so far. I am going to try the cable from the trans. to the frame. What I've been doing is cleaning the contact point on the body, frame, ect. and the terminal itself with a wire wheel on my angle grinder and then shooting a coat of batt. protectant on it after I bolt it back on. As far as the connectors by the bat. I have ohmed them out and cleaned the connectors with a filed down file and put a little conducting grease in them.
So... I'll let you all know in about three months,lol.

Krrz,

Sounds like your are doing a pretty good job with it... especially using cond grease etc. Could the pins be yawning too much? (a name we gave to the female half that no longer springs back closed, as the elastic limit had been passed in the connector itself.) You might be able to bend the females just a bit to have a stronger mechanical hold. You also may want to think of getting replacements... you are having to play with them so often, it may cause a mechanical failure of the female before too long...
