As the title states, how do I know if the truck has a 53 or 55 block. Is there a way to tell in the vin? Or do you have to get under truck to look. I'm looking at an 2002, did they come in that model year? please help
2001 Ram 2500 CUMMINS QCSB 4WD SLT LARAMIE with 6" Fabtech Lift, 35 Mud BFG Terrain Tires wrapped around 17" American Racing Rims, Edge EZ Chip, 155 HP Injectors, AirRaid Cold Air Intake, Banks Ram Intake, 4 inch exhaust with 5 inch tip
There's a guy floating around here with 780k on his unrebuilt cummins. Now, according to duramax and ford guys, his truck should have fallen completely apart around the engine 7.8 times, since they all know that dodge trucks are junk and only last 100k before they spontaneously disassemble themselves while going down the road. That has happened to me 2.76 times, and both times I was only wearing boxers while driving so it was really embarrassing.
As stated above. The letters are about 1" tall and are below the injection pump, just above where the oil pan bolts to the block. The numbers are not hard to see or find.
If memory serves me, I think the 53's were used before 2002, (2001 and older) but someone that knows better may correct me. I have an 02 and it is a 56.
02 2500, QCSB, CTD, Auto, 4.10 gears, Patriot Blue/Silver, New VP44 and lift pump in 2008 at 42K miles. 56K as of 8/11 No performance mods, puke can is gone, and vent tube mod., Air Dog 100, Draw Straw V, 1/2" Vulcan Big line. Gauges, steering stab. bar, brite box
Driver side front of engine block. Very front corner, on the side, just above the oil pan rail.
You'll find a big "53", "55", "56", or....no big numbers at all.
Note: there's a wiring harness right in the way down there though. Has a loom bolted there also. You may have to unbold that loom and move the harness to be able to see it.
Very RARELY do you see a "53" casting in an 01 or 02. I've seen a few, but, cannot confirm who put them there. (dodge or prev owner)
IMO: I wouldn't worry about what's in it now. I'd worry about what numbers are on the replacement block when/if the time came.
