alright so my brother has a 99 cummins with an auto he has been haveing problems with it shifting or lack there of! its started out that the trans wouldnt shift out of first gear until you let off the throttle and then it would shift from 2nd to 3rd at kinda high rpms, until about a week or 2 ago it seems it has gone into limp mode, when its in drive it will stay in 3rd but you can manually shift it and it runs absolutley perfect! so i did some digging and i swapped the pcms from my truck to his truck and i experienced the EXACT same symptoms that his truck had befor it went into limp mode(or atleast it seems like limp mode correct me if im wrong)! so my questions are 1.did i miss anything when diagnosing the problem and 2. how do i get his truck out of limp mode to see if my pcm will fix his problem? ive tried searching for it on google and the forum but cant find any info on how to get it out! any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

well have you checked the truck for codes? Does the engine rev and act normally but its only the tranny having problems? It sounds like some solenoid or relay issues in the tranny or maybe even the bands out of adjustment, but dont quote me on that im not very familiar with the auto trannys in these things. If it is in fact in some kind of limp mode disconnect battery cables for a while to reset the memory.

You have to clear the codes to get it out of limp mode. If you don't fix the problem, the code will come right back and put you into limp mode again. Limp mode is the PCM's way of trying to protect the transmission from further damage. Retrieve the codes and post them here.
is the tranny suncoast or stock? i had the same problem i ended up having a whole in my cooler line, and loosing fluid. it doesnt feed enough pressure to the valves. and check codes see if theres any tranny codes.
you could try the DNJ gov. upgrade but thats quite pricy and to check the fluid the tranny has to be in nuetral
