Well i kinda messed up i think.... i put the timming point at 12 o'clock instead of the keyway... when i pulled the pump my heart dropped as no key was in sight ! so i gently reached around the shaft to find the key still in tact and grabbed onto it for dear life. i got the pump out, but now i was wondering if its safe to bar over the motor. ill keep a close eye on the gear !
also, what the best proceedure to purge air from a fresh vp44 ? and safeest way to start it ?

I dont think the gear has enough room to skip time. as far as the first start, leave the 1st, 3rd, 4th or so lines loose until fuel starts to come out. then tighten them up and it will start fairly quick.

but when you open those lines, are you doing it at the rear of the VP44 pump? or up at the injector fittings by the head? Are you also opening the feed line to the VP44?
You open the lines at the head not at the pump or you will never get it right. I would crack all the lines you can get at(dont bother trying #6), helps to get it fired right away instead of missing on the few you didnt crack untill the bleed out. You shouldnt have to do anything with the feed line at the pump either.
