98.5-02 PowertrainDiscussion of components that are directly involved in the power production and all that is needed to get and keep the truck moving . Engine , Transmission Ect..NO ADVERTISING .
i have a 98.5 3500. the truck is leaking oil from the crank case breather on the back of the motor. when i run the truck normally it barely leaks. actualy its a small drip about 16 seconds apart. when im pulling my trailer it dumps out. the other night i went about 400 miles and went through four gallons. also the kid who works on it for me got it to dump oil when he held the throttle at 2500 rpms. a few people said its a broken ring. the only reason i am questioning the thought of a broken ring is the fact that the truck runs perfect. no smoke, no performance loss, nothing out of the ordinary in the drive or idle except the oil dumping out. anyone else experience this? anyone have any suggestions before i have the motor ripped apart?
Do the AC door controls work??? Does cruise control work????
If the vacuum pump does not pull a vacuum, it becomes a air pump into into the crankcase. Since it is a positive displacement pump, the faster the engine runs the more air is pumped inro crankcase and blown out the breather.

now that i think about it the heat is only coming out the defroster no matter what setting it is on. i have not used my cruise in a long time but i did recently go to use my 4wd and it would not engage and i was told it would caused by a vaccuum issue. man i hope your right. its killing me to think i will have to rip apart a cummins with 180k. thanks i will let you know.
hey dozer, i did find a vacuum line disconnected. the heat controls are working fine now. i drove the truck for a while and then revved it and held it 2500 for about ten seconds. all i got out of the breather tube was a small drip. im going to let the truck sit for a while and get a good reading on the oil then clean the back and bottom and run it hard on the highway to check for any oil underneath or loss of oil. so far its looking good. thanks again for your help. if this worked your a lifesaver and just saved me thousands. thanks again
it was the hose that went from the power steering pump to the tower on the firewall just over the brake fluid
Correction. The hose goes t vacauum pump which is mounted PS pump and gear housing. The alunimnun thing.

Ditch the crankcase vent and try my mod... Crancase Vent
It helps...

since dozer advice i have gone 2000 miles hauling three cars or trucks. i was towing three cars at a time for half the miles and my foot trailer the other half. i cant believe it but i only went through a half of a quart of oil. dozer thank you so much. you were a life saver on this one. i cant believe a vacuum line caused such mayhem. so howw are you with the death wobble? even if you dont know anything about it you still the man. thanks again. if i ever haul a load in your area i owe you a beer.

It's not as good as a beer but if you go to one of Dozer's replies and click the "Thanks" button it will add to his thanks count.
