Hub or Ball Joint???

Got a slight squeak in the front of My '02. Drivers side. Also a vibration at about 50 MPH. and some outside edge Tire wear. The wear is every block on the outside edge is half worn accross the middle. I can't have the truck down while someone hunts and pecks looking for the problem. It needs to just get done so I want to get some parts up and ready. The ABS light comes on every now and then as well. My question is does the ABS light comming on intermittently mean the hub or can it also be ball joints?

No codes, fuel pressure 17.

a quick check on your front end can be done by just jaking it up inthe air and try and move the top of you tire in or out and also try and move the front of your tire in or out. that test should lead you to your problem.

p.s. do you help henry van dam 33v or are you a fan?

I jacked it and can't seem to get any movement anywhere. I was going to take the caliper off and the drag link off to maybe if that would free something up. I am Henry Van Dams Crew chief. Who You?

old crew chief...lol..back in the N.S.T. days .crew chief for Jeff Thompson.started crew chief for wilskey way back in the day up at skagit....lol...now my kids are racing at the track behind the pits at Elma.i tend to come in the pits from time to time.

i just replaced my front panhard bar(some call it a track bar).the only way i could tell it was bad was i had to have the wife turn the steering back and forth for me to see that the ball-end was shot.

Thought about trac bar but looks solid and no cupping of the tire. Wilskey is a legend. You sound a little older that me. I started with Kane at skagit then on to Hillier then to HVD. Stop in sometime.

Track bars won't cause wear, and checking balljoints on these trucks can take some serious effort, just take it to a shop and tell them you want to know what is loose on your truck, it should take them anymore than 15-20 minutes to tell you.

Sounds like a wheel bearing issue with the abs light coming on (Assuming it has 4 wheel ABS). Does it make a growling noise (or grinding) when going around corners??

Jack it up and put a long cheater pipe under the tire and have someone pry on it . . . you should be able to see movement in the ball joints if they are bad. Could have a combination of worn front end parts causing the tire wear . . .

My vote is wheel bearing. My ABS and brake light came on one day and then off. The next day it stayed on and by the third day the bearing completely failed. the ABS sensor is inside the sealed hub and as the bearing fails the ABS computer can no longer read that wheel speed therefore giving you the dummy lights.

Why not just do the ball joints while you have it apart? The wheel hub unit is a huge PITA to change. Make sure to be VERY liberal with the anti-seize when you put it back together.

would the hub cause the shimmy in the front end?

It sure could. If the hub bearings are coming apart inside, there may be enough freeplay to cause a shimmy.

Also the tire wear from whatever is bad will cause a shimmy too. Sounds like the bearing to me too, but I would certainly look at the ball joints while you're at it. The factory ones don't seem to last very long. For that matter check the axle joints too. There are quite a few DIY write ups on this forum regarding hub removal tips and tricks. If the hubs have never been off before, they can be a pain to remove.

Sprint car fan too

I can't stress looking up the tips and tricks enough. You could beat on that thing for 2 days and not get it off with out the extension power steering trick. Its in the service manual and snap-on makes a special tool for it so clearly it is the way to go. PB Blaster is your friend as well.
