So if/when diesel smogs come to California...

I have my stock airbox so I'll throw that on just in case. I'm not worried about my exhaust because there was no cat or anything when new. My only worry is my superchips flashpaq. Does it leave a trace when uninstalled? How can I get rid of all traces of it.

It's sad that I even have to think about a diesel smog. California is so screwed...

Are they actually going to check the ECM software? If it was me I would just restore it to stock and leave it be...

If I was aiming for cheating then I would use a Smarty at 50% power and hope they don't check the software... But the only thing I know that can check it is DRB III (dealer only item) or Cummins Insite (Cummins Tool) which I doubt any of them are going to have...

From what I read on another site I heard it will be visual under the hood and exhaust and they'll plug something into the port under the dash to check the computer. Don't know if it will be capable of detecting traces of programmers or not. I don't want to find out the hard way though. Knowing California it will be flagged as a risk and I'll have to have it checked every year or something.

I think what they will do is check for common error codes like P0602 (Smarty error code). Then like over boost codes...

Once again they would need a DRB III tool or similar to actually see the software... I really wonder if the EPA is willing to purchase expensive tools like this just for a smog test???

I read somewhere that the flashpaq might leave traces like the memory space being changed or something about the number of times the truck has been started is ridiculously low. I think the guy said his showed it was started 6 times with 15K miles. And that's how they know.

But I hope like you said that they won't have sophisticated equipment at the test stations.

I would think that while some chips might show up, the boxes wouldn't, like the Comp, PM3, etc. since they don't actually go into the programming of the ECU. I'm sure someone on here knows how they work better than I do, though, so I might be wrong.

when they obd II your truck something like a smarty will show up on half power mode, something like a quadzilla is less likey to cause problems because its a stand alone box and does not directly chance the ECM like a smarty, all it does is change the voltage that the computer sees from the APPS and MAP sensor, so the worst you could have is a high/low voltage code or an overboost code, which are easy to clear and could be attributed to other more likey problems with a truck, therefore less likely to show that you had it programmed.

next just make sure you remove your programmer a few weeks before you smog it.

now if you had injectors that another story, unless you swap them for stock ones your only option is to put a DPF on for the day of the smog then take it off later, now a DPF is not stock equipment on our trucks but they are on new trucks so their CARB approved, they shouldnt have a problem with it.

as for turbos and intakes, stock it back out

now its my understanding that ANY smog shop will be able to smog ya, well if anyone has ever been to a low end smog shop, especially in Fresno, there pretty crooked, and $50 or $100 and they didnt see anything, now im not promoting breaking the law but .... lets just say i get stuff done ...

and truth be told i would stress until you get your smog notice in the mail, it will come with your registration notice, so even once you get the notice youll have a month or two to be able to make it pass, i mean i dont want these smog regs any more than the next person, but if they wanna play the game, then i can play too, game on

I feel the same way... its just like playing around with cams and headers on late model cars... when smog comes around you just take it off. Kinda of a pain, but thats California.

I could be wrong but you could always set your program back to stock and have the dealer re flash your ECM before emissions testing once a year. I guess it will all come down to how far California is willing to take the emissions testing and if your willing to pay to get your ecm re-flashed. Correct me if im wrong.

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to avoid. $50 for a smog ever other year and then the cost of a reflash. If that's the case then I'll just reflash and go back to an edge ez or something that is easily removable.
