Fuel Tank Leak Question????

So me and a buddy of mine installed my Airdog 100 about two weeks ago. In the process of either hooking up or removing the return line we must have damaged the 90 degree fitting on top of the fuel canister. So I go to the gas station to get gas and there is fuel leaking down both sides of the tank to the point where there was a steady drip on the ground. So I weighed my options and decided to just go with a canister out of a newer truck with the in tank pump because the fittings on top of the canisters out of the newer trucks or the trucks with the in tank lift pump are plastic. So I got it Tuesday (Thanks to Pitweenie, Super Good Dude!) and we put it in this morning. Everything went pretty smooth, we let it idle in the driveway and not leak. Sweet, right? Wrong. I get to my buddies shop because the seal in the tail shaft of the transfer case is slinging fluid all over the bottom of the truck (which I figured out while we were crawling around as we were installing the Airdog) and we start lifting it up and the air and there is diesel all over the tank again. Any ideas? Its so hard to tell when the tank is in the truck. Has anyone had to replace the seal that you put in when you drop the fuel canister back into the truck. I dont think its coming from the same place which was the return line with the pop lock. We did have some trouble getting the return line off of the old fitting but it looked ok. I just want my truck leak free! Damn! Tail shaft seal went in ok. Anyone else had experience with this?
Thanks

Hey,

Maybe the rubber O-ring has a tear in it? You sure none of the AD fittings/ hose are leaking?

Later,
Winslow

I dont think they are. Its so hard to tell because by the time I have figured it out each time there has just been fuel everywhere so you cant see where its coming from. Did you have any leaks with your install. Im suprised Im having these issues.

are you sure when you screwed the cannister ring on that it was straight and evenly on, sometimes its hard to get the threads lined up, and also make sure you didnt over tighten the ring. that could maybe cause the seal not to seal properly.

Hey,

No I didn't have any issues!

Yeah make sure the ring got screwed down straight, and tight, but not too tight!!!

You might want to check the tank its self... also maybe the filler neck?

Winslow

Will do. Its at my buddies shop right now. I was thinking of having them replace the poplock fitting because it was kind of hard the get off the old rusty fitting on the old fuel canister and install a new gasket around the canister. The ring wouldnt go on straight at first so we had to screw it down as far as we could get it and then I just smacked the other side down with my hand.

Hey,

Well...

I know it's a pain, but you must have patience and it will go without a hammer!!!! That could be your problem... Better check the threads and for any cracks!

Winslow

I hear you but I didnt use a hammer, we just couldnt get it lined up. I didnt hit it hard I just hit it with the palm of my hand. I think its something more obvious. I dont think it cracked the threads or anything. Ill post up what we did when its fixed. We ordered the gasket from the dealer today. They just wont have it until tomorrow. Im still wondering about that pop lock fitting though. Thats got me thinking. It probably wouldnt hurt to replace it but I dont know how involved that would be. Some things are not as simple as they seem.

Hey,

When you get the o-ring off, take a real close look at it and see if it has any cuts or anything on it!!!!

Which pop-lock are you referring to??

Later,
Winslow

The one on the return line. I have a feeling that might be the issue because we had so much trouble getting it off when we dropped the tank. We are going to try that first. I would be surprised if it was actually the seal around the canister but crazier things have happened.

Hey,

The blue one where the AD returns to?

You might try lifting the bed off so you can take a better look!!! You could run the truck and see exactly where it is leaking!!!

Good-Luck,
Winslow

something that might make it even easier to get the plastic lock fitting off is they make a tool for that its basically like pliers but shaped to the circular pop lock fitting and they are cheap too. its a great tool to keep have around. but i have taken those plastic fittings off a llot of times on different vehicles and have never had a problem with them leaking. so i really cant tell you for sure what your problem is but good luck and hope you figure it out. i know fuel systems aren't the funnest things to work on..
