Found a truck but have a question

I found a truck that has an automatic trans and 4.10 rear end? I was wondering if that gear ratio will really kill my MPG? I also was wondering if i were to put a bigger tire on it would the bigger tire cancel out the gear ratio and give me a better MPG reading.

4.10's will definitely lower your fuel mileage (I can't say how much) and going to a taller tire would compensate for the low gear ratio, but the big tires are going to be heavier than stock so if they did help the MPG I wouldn't imagine it would be much. Also a wider tire gives you less MPG.

Another thing to think about is the suspension. Bigger tires on the front puts more stress on your ball joints, tie rod ends wheel bearings, etc...

i get around 18mpg on the freeway with 4.10's and 315 70r17's. thats only going 65. towing a 20ft flatbed with 4 quads on it, i get around 15mpg. going 60-65 mph.

empty going 70-75 i get around 16mpg. that couple mph extra may get you there faster, but its actually what kills your mpg.

hmm..ok. as long as i get somewhere between 16-20 mpg i would be happy. I need something that gets good fuel mileage for being a truck lol. I need a truck but a bigger part in my decision making is which setup would get me better mpg. I will eventually be putting bigger tires on the rig like a 285 or 305 tire so maybe the 4.10s would be better for me.

if its not long distance stuff, maybe look into swapping 3.73's in later on down the road. it won't hurt your mileage too bad while towing, and it will help when the truck is empty.

well i dont want to buy a truck that im going to have to swap out the gears in right away. There are two trucks im stuck between. both 2002 2500s auto extended cabs, this one is green with a short bed leather interior for 13995 with 155k miles. The other one is a gray one long bed with 165k miles for 12995. Im not sure on the gray ones gear ratio though.
