I think for someone who hasn't tried it before I'd start out trying 5th to 6th. To me that is by far the easiest change.

IMO once you figure it out not using the clutch is easier, not sure how bad it is on the trans but I drove a 99 CTD 2500 with a 25' trailer with approximately 12K in it without the clutch that truck is going on 300,000 miles on and it is on its second clutch because it was driven by a moron that borrowed it It would probably still be on its first clutch if he knew how to drive without riding the clutch and burning it up. Have never had a problem with sycronizers or anything with it. But I am a farm boy that got lots of practice with manuals driving grain wagons around the farm.

These are not dogboxes, lol wow. Why not use a clutch on a syncro tranny? I can see no reason to not use the clutch unless you like destroying your own property.

I've yet to see any real numbers to confirm this myth. someone call mythbusters! rofl

as far as why not using the clutch. its personal choice really IMO especially if you have some sort of aftermarket clutch thats harder to push in, it will save your leg excess strain. maybe its not a big deal for most, and if your used to driving an 18 wheeler its only natural to shift without the clutch, if you know your truck and how it shifts at rpm/speed then I do not see how you could create any excess strain on the synchro.

not to mention you now have first hand testimony from grazmo about driving almost 300k on a stock clutch speed shifting.

Yeah someone needs to give mythbusters a call lol.

I agree with the guys that says its Heck on the syncro's only if you dont know what your doing.

If you have to wait for it to slide into gear then (yeah your killing your syncro's) But If you know your truck good enough and you can match the rms for each gear and there is no hesitation in the shifter. Then you saving wear on your entire drive train.

well you can wait to tag it in but don't just shove against the stick waiting to force it in as soon as the collars line up. that will kill more than just a synchro for sure.

Excatly if you can match them both up so it falls in then there is no wear. But if you hold the stick (like Dracozny said) against the gear slot waiting for it to drop. Thats way bad lol

I rarely shift without the clutch on mine, but on my jeep and the my bikes I speed shift all the time. It was pretty handy to know on the jeep when the clutch went

Hey,

Yeah I had to drive my '71 VW home one time without the clutch! It was at night, in the middle of town about 40 miles from home!! My brother pushed me off and away I went, not stopping once!!!

Years ago my dad drive his '66 VW from Florida to Kansas without a clutch, with three of brothers with him!!!!! I bet that was fun!!!

Later,
Winslow

i never use the clutch, ive pretty much masterd the "sweet spot" in the rpm range for it. only time i do use the clutch is from dead stops and when the outside temperture is below 50, drive the truck till the fluids are at opperating temp. but unless you have a dual disk clutch theres really no reason to not use it. shifting without the clutch is just easier on a hot intermediate plate, saves them from cracking when the clutch is disengauged and rattleing around.
not sure if that really made any sence lol

90% of the time i clutch it, but sometimes i don't. i can do it just fine, smooth, whenever i want, but it takes a bit more concerntration, so i usually wuss out and use the clutch.
