My guess would be because the Jeep is lighter.

Hey,

I do both, depending on how I feel and where I'm at. If I'm trying to boogie fast I use the clutch, but if I've been driving for several hours, I try not to use the clutch b/c I get tired of moving my left leg!

My truck doesn't care to much, but it will tell you when you screwed up!!

I read years ago in a 4 wheel mag that shifting without the clutch is easier on the transmission/ synchos if done properly, not ramming/ jamming gears!

Also you got to think that in big trucks the clutch is only used to start out with, and yes I know the transmissions are different.

I've clutchless shifting in just about every car we've got around here. My moms '03 Mazda doesn't like it much, but it can be done smoothly if you practice (I don't on it). My '71 VW I would clutchless shift alot when I drove it everyday. Works on most, but the Dodge does it the easiest!!!!

I usually let the truck get around 2000 RPMs slide the shifter out, let the RPMs drop and slid her in gear! Works about 90%+ of time, but sometimes if you aren't paying attention it won't go, or will grind!! I takes some practice to get it smooth and not to grind, but is really handy when driving in town, or just driving a lot!!

You could add a third area in the poll some of use who do both!?!?!?

Later,
Winslow

THink it is too late for the third option now lol. I just wanted it to be fairly straight forward and no grey areas on the poll. The guy at the dealer that usually works on my truck says to shift it clutchless is best, and the guy that rebuilt it said the same, unless you grind.

you can do it either way, but our tranny are a totally different beast than those of an 18 wheeler, if not careful, you can fry the synchros, and ruin a carrier bearing...

I didn't vote because I do both. Of course you need the clutch to get going. I find 2nd to 3rd is hard to do smoothly. Its hit or miss. 3-4, 4-5, 5-6 I have no problems at all going between the gears. The majority of the time I'll use the clutch but its easily done without.

I hadn't got the hang of it yet. Will commonly shift to neutral when slowing, but not shifting up or down yet. May try it soon.

upshifting:
from 2nd to 3rd its the clutch although i can shift without its just such a short gear its more of a pain since i often over rev. from 3rd to 4th its a finicky beast and 90% of the time I'm slammin the clutch in anyways. from 4th to 5th its easy as heck to shift without.
down shifting:
from 5th to 4th no probs. 4th to 3rd its fine, beyond that there just is not enough road before the signal light or idiot traffic in front of me. 3rd slows me down enough that i usually just drop to neutral and coast that last 10 feet with the brake.
I haven't had to tow with this girl yet so maybe it will be different in that circumstance.
