One of the misconceptions is that the axles used in second gen. Dodges are the same as the axles used in the Dana 80 hybrid. Our trucks with Dana 70 rears are actually Dana 70U's. They have a smaller 1.41 inch 32 spline axle than a standard Dana 70. They also have smaller pinion bearings.

So is a Dana 70HD a standard Dana 70? I thought a Dana 70U was slighty more common than a Dana 70HD.

I don't know. The older Dana 70's, the Dana 70u and Dana 70 HD are pretty much a cluster f---. They also had 3 different pinion offsets from what I've found.

There is so much grey area with axles, and the variations don't help either. But that's what's good about these forums, discussions like this help clear things up.

Ford used 35 Spline D80's too? I was under the assumption Dodge was the only company to have 35 Spline Dana 80's unless I'm misreading.

The Dana 70 HD also used 1.5 inch 35 spline axles. The difference is it uses larger pinion and carrier bearings than the standard Dana 70.

Check out this guide locker guide.pdf it's pretty accurate. If you look under Ford F/E 350, 450, 550 you'll find a 1998 to 2003 Dana 80 with 1.5 inch 35 spline axles. They were also 8 lug.

That has some odd listings. 40 Spline D-60's, Dana 70 front end's in F550's. I'm gonna have to look into that alittle more.
