![]() This is why all of us will HIGHLY SUGGEST... 1. Get a fuel pressure gauge and ALWAY keep the pressure above 10 PSI. 2. Get a fuel system upgrade like FASS or AirDog soon. Running a truck with loow to ZERO fuel pressure is like running a engine with a dead oil pump. The only thing that lubricates the VP44 is fuel so if you don't have enough fuel pressure/volume that VP44 is metal to metal contact with all internal parts...

SHort answer is Yes. Get a Raptor, AirDog or Fass on the truck asap. Generally, the above mentioned pumps don't fail, so I wouldn't say its essential to run a light or gauge with them...but it isnt a bad idea either. IF (BIG IF) you catch a dying lift pump early enough, going to a good pump MAY save your VP44. The crappy thing is, it might last another 5 years or 5 miles. VP's will typically give some signs of failure before leaving you stranded. Hard starts hot, stumbling, lack of power and usually injection timing codes.l As mentioned above, lubrication is key, so be sure that you are running some sort of additive, two-stroke oil or a little bio to help keep the pump happy. Good luck!

3800$ for the pump is rediculous, its what 3 hours to put in... you can get a pump from thorobred diesel for 1050$, free shipping, no core charge for 14 days and they pay to ship the core back.... i've done two pumps that way and haven't had any bad expierences.

They are definitely taking advantage of you. 300$ to trouble shoot,! at best 1 hour worth of labour, how long can it take to pull codes and check fuel pressure! and for what your paying for the factory intank you could buy a FASS or AD and pay someone to install it or do it your self and save a couple hundred dollars.and end up with a better proven pump!, 2700 installed, its criminal! but I guess its the way dealers operate, I feel for you. If you have any money left spring for a fuel pressure gauge, and it might help you down the road. around here shop rate is around 105$ or better, how much is it in your neck of the woods?

Adding a bit more now... (Book hour rate) VP44 pump replacement - 4.0 Hours VP44 Diagnostics - 1.0 Hour Lift pump replacement (Stock) - 0.7 Hours So for a total of 5.7 hours the job is done... Now lets throw price of $90 a hour... $90 x 5.7 = $513 for labor.
