Hey guys, I don't really know that much about second gens but I would like to help my Dad out with his farm truck.
He has some "marine" injectors and a really old Quadzilla chip with a 3-way switch on his 98.5 flatbed, manual trans farm truck. No gauges or any other mods... The thing will smoke pretty good and I'm a little worried about his egt's towing. I looked under the hood and man that turbo looks tiny, and I think the exhaust is 3.5" or something??
1) What's the cheapest turbo upgrade he could do to clean up those injectors.
2) What's ya'lls take on us needing to do the "killer dowel" fix??? How hard is it? (I have personally done everything in my sig except trans work)
EDIT: Just forgot to add that it's a farm truck that is used for towing... mostly a large tandem axle gooseneck loaded with round bales.
Marine or RV injectors? Never heard of a marine injector for the vp trucks.
An Hx40 is a good upgrade, but it is going to have a big housing of its a legit holset, but they are.pretty cheap.
lol... forgive my ignorance but I don't know. He said a local shop offered to put in a set of "marine" (his words) injectors and now he wishes he didn't have them. I can tell they are larger than stock because it will black out pretty good.
Thanks for the quick response. I'll have to look around for a Hx40!
so its a 24v right? i would get a fuel pressure gauge if i were you
Yes it is a 24v. I would really like to address his egt problem first. I would bet my left testicle that he's getting hot with that little turbo and bigger injectors... not to mention the Quad box. I was hoping I could maybe "out of pocket" find a used turbo or something to help him out and at the same time create a fun "father/son" day installing it. It seems the older we get the fewer of those that happen.
if it doesn't have gauges how do you know his egts are high? maybe you could look into a combo gauge egt, fuel press. and boost. If you have a factory lift pump and you don't have enough fuel pressure you will burn out your injector pump real quick. It happens all the time.

I don't know for a fact they are high, but his major complaint is the smoke. I'm not trying to perfect his truck, just help him out. I am betting on high egt's because larger injectors, elevated programming, stock turbo, black smoke and then add a large gooseneck with 15 roundbales...
Don't get me wrong, I have a full complement of gauges on my truck, lift/rail/egt/boost/drive. I'm sure you have a very valid point, but I can't afford to buy everything for him, just a couple of things..... maybe only one thing...lol
Id say he might be getting hot egts but I would recommend the guages package then he can monitor his egts and adjust his driving if it gets hot but would be able to keep an eye on his fuel pressure also on vp truck your fuel pressure is a big deal I could hit 0 psi with my edge juice before I got my airdog 150

Thanks for the feedback, but I'm still stuck in the muck here. You see - Dad is complaining about the smoke from the larger injectors. Buying a gauge set won't fix that... Maybe finding someone willing to trade some stock tips for his and ALSO buying a gauge set might work... or finding a cheap used turbo upgrade and gauges, THAT would work too.
Have you checked for boost leaks, that could contribute to excessive smoke. What setting does he run the quadzilla on

Not yet, but I have the caps to pressurize the system to check. I haven't asked but I think on the middle "click"... heck I don't even know what Quad box it is... I do know it has a metal cover, not plastic and it's pretty old. I'm going out to see him this weekend so I'll do a little more looking/testing.
