Mod For Mod Horsepower Diesel 7.3L vs. 5.9L (24 Valve)

Ok First Off Let Me Start Off Saying that I don't want to start a war here, I'm only trying to find out some feedback/opinions on such motors.

Feedback/opinions are greatly appreciated.

Here are some stock specs on each motor:

1999 7.3L PSTROKE 235@2,700 500@1,600
2001 7.3L PSTROKE 250@2,600 525@1,600

98-00 5.9L Cummins(24v) Auto 215@2700
420@1600
98-02 5.9L Cummins(24v)Manual 235@2700
460@1600

Stock for Stock the Powerstroke has a slight heads up, but once the mods start which gains more Horsepower/Torque?

I'd say the 24v VP44 pumped Cummins is the only Cummins a PowerStroke could even get a whiff of in a power comparison. Reliability wise, the 7.3 probably tops the VP44 engines.

I'd say reliability wise the 5.9 engine will outlast but definetley not the IP.

The 5.9 even with the VP44 will out do a 7.3. If you can Find on 2001 2002 dodge with a 6 speed you get 245hp and 505tq which makes it a little more closer.

well with the PS if you want to do injectors go ahead and pull out your check book and lay a way plans b/c they are very $$$. VS the CTD which only has 6 injectors, with a more HP range to choose from. I know the VP44 isnt the best IP in the world but they can be upgraded as well. the motor itself is alot easier to work on for DIY projects, TWINS TURBOS is a good idea. But far as the PS goes the best ford model they have yet to use,i still say long live the 7.3L but it never will beat a 5.9 CTD by far the best bang for the buck.....you will regret buying a PS for the exshaut sound like my buddy has done, ask him after he catchs up to me and clears the black smoke for his eyes

did some research for a buddy that's a ford junkie. found that the 7.3L was the best thing since sliced bread for FORD. had the truck a month so far(the problems) nice ehaust leak appeared on the trip home from AZ to CA. then the tranny blew up last week. I will NEVER EVER even consider a ford. I beat my dodge to death and it keeps asking for more.

I swear I dont know why you guys b!tch about the dodge part of our rigs!!!
What part of it is dodge, The frame and the cab?
Cummins engine
NV trans (OK so the autos are dodge, but autos suck anyway)
NV Tcase
Dana Axles

IMHO, the best trucks ever made, thats why I bought one.

Chevy's feel vauge when driving to me, and the ride is stiffer than my dodge, and IFS sucks ballz

Fords are way too hard to work on and the quality is slipping way out of line. My dad had ford trucks all his life until he recently bought a chevy (all gas BTW I cant get him to convert) and his 92 ford was the best of all. The 99 he got had to wait forever to even get the truck after he ordered it, and the quality just was not there, truck was falling apart after 50K miles

Just my observations!!!

Bing ho.

the metal rusts if you look at it wrong.

Im sure that the severity of cps failures on the fords more than makes up for vp44 issues.

A CPS is $35, one 10mm wrench and 3 minuts. A VP-44 is $1100 and a whole lot harder to change. Not even close to a comparison. I have a 99 F-350 with 120K on it and the original CPS, and I have a 2000 Excursion with 58K on it and one CPS change.

Ford doors close with no rattle, there is no road noise, you can straight pipe the exhaust and put the windows up and not know if the truck is loud or not.... my Dodge is like a resonance box on wheels. I like the idea of the cheap and easy power that a 5.9 can deliver.... I like the look of the truck... but the feel of it is nothing like my older Fords... let alone a 05+ Ford. Chevy trucks.... old man trucks. They just look so weak, and with the asian looking front end, they look like a Toyota on roids. At least the dodge looked like a tough American truck up until 06..... I am still trying to find my fondness for them. I cant get over those big slanted headlights.... reminds me of the 02+ GM trucks. Hey, the one cool thing about the Chevy trucks is that you dont need a plow on the front to go and push snow.... just use the front bumper that is dragging on the ground on those hidious looking trucks!

Dodge has the lamest tranny on the market. Its a 1972 Torquflight with an OD tailsection added on. The Ford 4R100 and E4OD had issues, but could be easily be reprogrammed in the valve body to work fine if you knew a competant tranny guy.... and there does not seen too be a whole bunch of those out there! If there were, ATS and D diesel, and Goerend would never exist. Anyone can recreate thier combinations in thier back yard.... just order the right kits and parts and make it so. Do you think these guys build clutches? Valve body parts? How about Alto and Trans-Go? Yea... thats who makes them.

Anyways, each of these big 3 have thier issues, the 7.3 will never win the race without having 4 times the money and time put into it... and even then the Cummins and Duramax can continue to be built into a world of power that the 7.3 and 6.0 just wont go to. But when the race trucks of the world fall over broken and damaged... a 7.3 will rumble on over (nice and slow like) with a trailer on its back side and tow your broke *ss home! Thats what mine do all the time!
