HX35 or HY35

I understand they are a little different when it comes to the wast gate but is there a benefit to one or the other and are the interchangeable?

I have a 01 with an HY and i have a spare HX with less miles sitting i my garage. This is why i am asking.

Thanks for the input in advance.

HX has a slightly larger exhaust housing allowing better egt control over the hy, also the hx can handle slightly more boost, but it is still limited to about 32-35psi before pushing hot air and over speeding, I would not try to push a hy past 30.

I say swap it.

I believe that the HY35 has a 9cm exhaust port and the HX35 is 12cm exhaust port, so the HX35 is a little bit bigger turbo. In the 1998.5-1999 years, all trucks got the HX35. 2000-2002 the stickshifts got the bigger HX35, while the autos got the smaller HY35. If you stay stock, the HY35 will spool faster (but run hotter), but if you upgrade your power at all the HX35 would be the better bet.

Do the swap cause if you add even a little more fuel it will work better.

lay the two turbos side by side! the HX is larger. I switched my hy for hx and its a huge improvement over the hy in the EGT dept, spooling is no different.
It will be worth it to switch them over, it only takes an hour of your time to do

I may be off on the years. I keep forgetting whether it was 2000 or 2001 when they made the switch.

while the HX can support a little more power. To deal with swapping them out, id rather just get a worthwhile upgraded turbo instead of just another stocker.

jmho.

im pretty sure it was 01 when they started w/ the hy (not sure why they would start putting it on)...and to the original question, just do it...cooler egt's are always nice and the swap really wont take long at all...take a saturday afternoon and enjoy a slightly bigger turbo

exactly, if its free its a nice upgrade, and if you had to get one cheap its a nice upgrade, I paid 100$ for my HX and it was worth every dollar, with the HY I would spike the EGT before I hit 60mph on any level above 3, now I can use level5 and just start to trip the egt warning at 80-90mph

And I have a HE351 (from a 05) sitting on the bench, when I get time it will be my next upgrade, and it cost 100$ as well!
