ceramic coating

Whose had it done on anything? This doesn't pertain to my cummins but it does to my harley. I've been building a shovelhead bobber over the past 2.5 years and i just got all my parts back from powdercoat and had the pipes ceramic coated. now the shop themselves only did powdercoat but a guy that works for them does ceramic coating on the side and thats who did my pipes.

Now i got the pipes back and the coating is very thin (unlike powdercoat) and they look identical to black header spray paint. He said he would do the inside of the pipes aswell and didn't but the inside was blasted and theres no discoloration on the uncoated parts at all, which after baking at a supposed 600* i think they would be. Also i paid $140 for 2 exhaust pipes. Anyone with experience with this please chime in and let me know if i've been had.

The ceramic coating is pretty expensive of a product, then the sand blasting and the labor. Sounds about right actually. We used to do this on our turbo race cars, the turbine housings, and manifolds. It definitely helped retain heat inside the part and kept the iron from getting all rusty and ugly.

Thats not at all what i asked. I know its expensive im not concerned about the price i'm concerned wether he actually did the ceramic coating process or if he just hit it with a can of high temp spray paint

The price sound ok. One of the techs I work with does powder coating and ceramic coating. He did my exhaust manifold with black 2000deg ceramic for $60.

Jas,
The headers I have had done were always a dull silver color. So the black threw me, but apparently it is common now!!!

Take a look at this.

I was going to suggest heating on the inside. A propane torch is theoretically capable of around 3500 Fahrenheit. So I am not sure if I would dwell on it like this dude did, but it survived. On the SS, I see a dull glow of red at night with the hood open, under the ceramic.

HTH

Hag

thanks alot HAGGAR, so if it were just hit with the spray paint version of high temp ceramic the torch would probably destroy it huh?

Jas,

Without a doubt. The paint will smoke for certain, and then as the temperature rises, it will bubble and peel a bit.

I would try it from the inside, so you don't get carbon streaking on your new pipes.

The ceramic is VERY thin and you tell if it is spray paint by hitting it with a torch or trying some heavy duty thinner to see if it comes off.
