Ball joints

So i was doing a check uup of the truck the other day and jacked up the front end on one side . When i placed a bar under the tire a lifted the tire did move up and down. I have been looking around and people are saying up and down movement is normal on the top ball joint, but how much is too much? Anything helps thanks.

Without looking in the service manual I think the spec is close to 1/8 inch.

Although some will tell you "any play is unacceptable". Unless the ball joints are new, I think that expectation is unrealistic.

I've always gone by any play is unacceptable, my ball joints have about 30k on them and still have no play whatsoever. Plus when you work on customer vehicles for a living it's your a$$ getting fried when a component fails after it leaves your shop weeks prior.

But if work at a dealer and replace ball joints under warranty, Dodge can audit you and charge the dealer back for replacing parts that are within tolerance.

I've seen techs fired for that.

I think the tollerance is in the eye of the beholder.....My mechanic couldn't find any vertical play tollerance for the PA inspection. But the PA inspection only allows for minimal horizontal wear. Maybe 3/16
