so its getting cold here in Texas in the 20s
my truck does not over heat
it has trouble building heat but during the summer months it holds at a solid 190.
i cleaned all the oil mist out off the radiator. fan clutch is operation how it should, i have been thinking about going electric.
could it be that my tstat is just staying open? i have a gates 180 i was going to swap in just have not gotten around to doing so.
I know that my truck takes FOREVER to warm up. I replaced the thermostat with an OEM 190, but I can drive and drive and it seems like the truck is hard to warm up. Once I do hit 190, it cools off fast if I just shut it down for 15 minutes. I've given up on having any heat on my drive to work.
It's amazing the difference between my diesel and my Jeep Cherokee. That car can have heat within a few minutes after starting!!!
Check your heater hoses after warming up. Both should NOT be hot. One from the head should be hot nearly 190*F the one going to the return tube should be about 100-120*F much cooler feeling this shows good heat exhange. If the hoses are both hot then the heater core is plugged up and not flowing good. As you can see I get excellent heat...
OK i am going to check it on my way home from work. i have about a 35 minute drive home. and if my heater core is plugged up any good way get it clean? i have herd of people using CLR to help clean it out. my dash is OEM and not cracked so i really dont want to go about replacing the heater core and mess up my dash! haha
As a reference, I drive 15 mins to work, it's 40-555 outside right now in the am. If I stay on the side roads my truck doesn't get much past 140 by the time I get to work so my heat is pretty weak. I can get to to warm up to 190 in about 5 mins if I jump on the highway to work (about 5 miles highway trip)
I figure no heat, I just go with it, roll the window down, arm out, coffee in hand, let the Cummins be my melody.
haha i am in the same boat. except when im on the highway mine still does not get past the 140 mark. so i have the carhartt on head gear and gloves! haha boss rolls up in a 4th gen wearing a t shirt... hes like "that heated steering wheel is where its at!"
Replace it. There is no way to clean it. CLR will do some but never completely clean it out.
I've been in New Meadows, ID today with -10*F weather and had to roll down the windows while I attempted to thaw a fuel filter out for a tractor. It was blowing so hot it would burn your finger after a while I had the cab well in the high 80's and my buddy and myself were sweating. All I can say is full replacement of the heater core.
The proper way to clean it is to have the header tanks removed and rodded out but it would cost more to do that than to buy a new heater core.
So I live up here in Fairbanks, Alaska. We run our diesels up here cold or hot with the most extreme temperature swings in the world. The first thing I would do is put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator. We actually have winter fronts installed up here. Everyone keeps pointing to the heater core but that would only concern the heat in the cab. The engine would still get warm if it was just the heater core. The next thing I would do to get the cab warm is to drill out the reducer going in to the top of the head. Way too small. Not enough flow for the heater core. If it's still not heating the cab, I would replace the heater core. Or run some PolyZag through the old one. Only problem is if you have holes plugged by corrosion gunk, this will remove that and make your heater core leak. If it doesn't leak after a couple times, you may have just saved yourself a bunch of time and money temporarily. You hear of people replacing the thermostat with a higher temp one. I don't believe in it. The temp was set there for a reason. Not to mention I can still get my truck to run hot at -60 below with a stock thermostat. Just a couple of things to start with.
