Thoughts on an axle dump exhaust? Thinking about it and wondering what length the tip should be. Stock height on the truck. If anyone has one, pics would be great. Looked a little on youtube but haven't really seen much for the 2nd gens on here.
I tend to agree with Me78569. I've seen a few like that and tend to louder with more drone noise in the cab. Depends on angle of cut and the mods on the engine.
It all depends on how low/high you cut it. My axle dump is fairly high(literally just after it crests over it has a few inches and then is cut), and when I had my smarty on and pushed a bit of soot, it had a tendency to get all over the underside and up along the tailgate and a bit on the sides. It wasn't much but it's noticeable more so on certain colors.
But ever since I got the truck tuned to where there's little to no soot (as it should be) I've had no problems with it.
I'm certainly not picking on what you want to do with the exhaust. Just note that in order to get it right you may have to play with the length, height, and tip angle in order to get the correct recipe so that exhaust reverberations dont create harmonics under the truck and so that soot doesnt build up on the rear. Exhaust waves tend to bounce around under the truck when exhaust dump underneath and because of the aerodynamic swirl at the tailgate area soot may not want to leave so easily.
Thanks for the replies guys, I've always liked the way look and sound on the 4th gens, but haven't seen or hear one except on youtube for the 2nd gens.
How does cutting the end of the exhaust shorter correlate with being a rice burner? I mean he's not putting a fart can or glass pack on like all the wannabe Honda civics. I personally think axle dumps look cleaner then the guy who decides to put a 8-24" tip on....
Honestly, it wasn't bad. I washed my truck maybe once a month, and for the most part it was just a film, kinda like dust. If it's allowed to build up it sort of turns into a fine paint overspray look and a bit darker. But it all comes off with a good wash with a rag.
Now if you don't wash it regularly, like some of the areas in my pics above, then it's a total . But that's several years worth of soot build up with zero washes
axle dumps go well with light bars, 24" rims, tow mirrors out, and "dirty money" stickers. just sayin, they are the laughing stock of the diesel world. get a real ****ing exhaust
if anything just cut off the 90 on the exhaist tip and dump it there. same noise effect is created by directing the exhaust downward, but wihtout the drone/soot.
I knew people would talk about how stupid they look which everyone can have their opinion so that ok. Just wanted to see some pics and get some feedback on people who has had them. Like I said I'm still on the fence, just need to get an exhaust and looking at options.
The same opinions hold true for every exit of exhaust. Stacks, single, front of tire, duals. Everyone has their favorite. It's your vision and money go for what you want.
Here in PA. it would not be legal, needs to exit out the side somewhere, or the back. Being from Wyoming I don't expect you have the communist laws we have but you may want to check first before you modify.
I did an axle dump a few months ago.. I would advise against it.. especially if you are hauling that camper in your profile pic. It's much more noisy. I wish I hadn't done it................

There's a local white 2nd gen here with side pipes.......whole bed is BLACK from soot. I can only imagine how hard it is to keep this thing clean, let alone the sound it must make.
