Another surging issue
Ok, I have read and followed the advice of the other surging issue's have had the apps replaced, after that I found a bad ground cable on the left battery and replaced that, my question is this, if the apps was set with a bad ground does it need to be reset? Also after the ground was replaced the surging occurs now more when the air temp is cold than when it is hot. This is on a 2001 Dodge 2500 Cummins, not chipped or anything. Hopefully someone has some idea where to look next, the Dodge dealer I have been working with seams to be troubleshooting by replacing parts, and that is very spendy. Thanks for any help on this |

I don't know it the ground you replaced would effect the apps voltage but it wouldn't be a bad idea to check it. Do you have a manual or auto transmission? What speeds or driving conditions does the engine surge? Is the check engine light on or do you have any fault codes?

Ok, it really doesn't matter what speed I am cruising at, as long as I am at a steady speed, have had it happen at 35 around town and also 65-75 on the highway, it is an automatic, the surging doesn't effect the shifting at all, it surges the RPM's up about 200 then back to what it started at, say like 1800 up to 2000 then back to 1800,as for the ground, I read somewhere that having a bad ground could cause fluctuations in the power. Thanks |

At this time there are no codes at all, before the APPS was changed it showed a code saying it was bad but that was it Thanks |

Sounds like fun!!! im only joking just had the SAME exact issue except i put on a FASS and checked my tranny... it ended up being bad battery cables... i cleaned (shaved) the batter posts and replaced the cable clamps and tightened everything up at the cables and my truck runs great again.... since your truck still surges at higher speeds that eliminates the possibility of your torque converter ... so check your battery connections and if that dont work start thinking lift pump

OK, so I had the negative cable on the drivers side battery replaced, and cleaned the other one and there was no change, I did reset the APPS to the correct voltage, also did something out of the blue, even though my oil is only 2 months old and not used for hard towing, took a sample to the lab here in town, the oil viscosity had broken down, so I did an oil change and have had no issue's since, Thanks to everyone for there help "Real Trucks Don't Use Spark Plugs" |

surging
im running an 02 6 speed and have been fighting the surge for a year now and about 5 grand$$ later for new parts it still surges, I dont want to scare you by tellin you this but i have replaced the injector pump, lift pump twice, and have a boost fooler, and a new apps sensor and it sat at the dealer in spokane wa, for three days and they told me nothing was wrong, i do however have some chips on it but it does it with or without them plugged in. Its all the time any speed doesnt matter, my boost gauge will go nutts fluctuating anywhere from 5 to 15 or 20 psi due to the surging. only thing i have yet to replace are the injectors. If the injectors dont fix it im thinkin the computer might be toast?? im running out of options and money. One more thing. it does not surge with the cruise on either. only when its off and when i do use the cruise my rpms stick at anywhere from a 1000 to 1600 rpms.

start by checking for codes and if there are some find out what they are and hopefully they are not pump codes. = $$$ im hoping i can put a set of hundred horse injectors in mine and fix it? if it dont then im leaning towards a bad ecm or computer? maybe. well see im not workin for a living or living to work, i work to keep my truck on the road. haha, its gettin old. if i didnt have so much money in it i would have totaled it on purpose by now. i bought my 02 a year ago with 64000 miles and its got 95 on it now and its been surging and doin all sorts of weird since.

it is HIGHLY likely that the main black ground wire coming off your alternator (the one that goes directly to your pcm) is getting grounded out by rf frequencies....wrap it in aluminum foil!! i can get a pic if u pm me later. mine was fixed after i wrapped it.

your posting in the wrong section, you should be posting in the powertrain section, and in that section at the top is a sticky TC lock up thread this will give the cures/checks for having TC lock/unlock issues A APPS will always code, (I've read that it might not but it seems rare) so you need to pull codes first. Also whats your fuel pressure? maybe its your LP acting up heres another link to look at Blue Chip Diesel Performance Specialists
