Exclamation BHAF service - and a heads up!

My BHAF was getting sorta grungy on the outside:

UGHHHHhhhh!

SO, time to see what was needed to get the intake back up to snuff. Took off the Outerwears, revealing the underliner my wife sewed up for me while I waited for the Outerwears to arrive - I had also applied some K&N filter oil to that liner that was left over from my K&N filter days:

HMMmmm - not bad, but not good either - better pull it off too, and check out the actual NAPA BHAF filter media to see what it looks like:

WOW! Not bad at all - in fact, it looks as clean as when it came out of the original box!

OK. so a look around in the BHAF mount area turned up this surprise:

A closer look:

HMMmmmm - a contact point of wear, a "dimple" where the end of the BHAF has rubbed into the air conditioning line - not good!

(CONTINUED)

Here's the correction:

Some hose split, and placed over the line to protect it - that line also sits directly upon the inner fender well - and is exposed to point of contact wear there as well, so the hose fix takes care of 2 points for the price of one - sure glad I caught the problem before the A/C line was punctured!

SO, washed both covers, and re-installed the BHAF:

Finished!

So what's the point?

Well, one point is that the Outerwears, plus the added inner lining, can greatly provide beneficial pre-filtering for the BHAF, extending it's service life without any detectable added airflow restriction.

Second, is that it's a good idea to check out the after effects of some of our "shade tree re-engineering" - sometimes we just might be trading one problem for another...

It's also worth noting that close examination of the neck area where the BHAF attaches to the stock intake tube was showing signs of buckling/crushing from the hose clamp - I had a short section of 4 inch exhaust tubing I had originally picked up for reinforcement at that point - but thought it wasn't needed due to apparent strength of the BHAF neck - I was wrong!

Surprising that the BHAF was so clean. How many miles on it?

Gary, just curious but have you dynoed your truck with and without the prefilters on your BHAF? Looks to me like you would have some significant airflow restriction with both of those prefilters. I used an Outerwears cover on my old BHAF for but left it off of my new filter. The only reason I used the cover was for possible water protection. I read somewhere on another website that the Outwear covers do restrict airflow more so than what the advertisements and sales people say. I'm using the Fleetguard AH19004 marine version now and according to Cummins/Fleetguard specs this filters capacity is 825 g per SAE J726. I figure the filter should be good for 2 years in the Texas heat and dust. After that, the filter will probably start to deteriorate anyway.

Bill, as far as I can see, and based upon what my filter minder indicates, the airflow with my BHAF as seen installed above has YET to show ANY restriction. And that SAME filter minder dropped to the 2/3 restriction mark the very FIRST steep Sierra grade I hit towing our 5er with the stock OEM filter - and that was before the considerable power mods I'm now running!

I figure my truck is about 425 HP and mid 900's torque if I go full bore with the stuff I have installed.

Could I get a few more ponies out of it without the added outer cover(s)?

Perhaps - but pretty insignificant, percentage-wise - and FAR less value to me than the added filtration they seem to be providing.

Gary, it might be my monitor, but is there a pink tinge on some of the pleats of the filter? Could that be the K&N oil being pulled through?
