why is cam sensor is in timing case on my 99

Hi, I am in the middle of my p pump swap and never realized when I took my 24v timing case off that the cam sensor was in there. I was under the impression that the 99's picked it up near the starter. Is it possible that I have a late model 99?

I wish I had noticed before because I already put the cam in and buttoned up everything up top...

98.5-00 trucks do use the crank sensor behind the starter. 01-02 trucks use the cam sensor on the timing case. You'll be fine without the sensor on the case, the factory tach will still work fine.

Thanks for the info, been pullin hairs thinking I am going to have to pull the cam back out to install an adapter... What does the sensor in the timing case do if it is not necessary, will I loose anything else?

Thanks again, Doug

01 - 02 trucks need the cam sensor to work the tach. 98.5-00 trucks its there and works but is not used for anything major in the ECM. It will maybe only throw a CEL. I have the 12V timing pin on my truck and my tach works just fine.

I have heard the same thing about ECM cutting the power at 4K and being easier on the pump when starting. I have mine wired up on toggle switch.
