Home Made Throttle Control/High Idle Set-up - NC

Whole reason for this thread was lately I had been feeling bad letting my truck idle while it's cold. Fear of cylinder wash I guess.

So I ran down to the local NAPA, picked up a 5' throtte control cable for $12. Cut off all but 2' of it. Found the mounting place I wanted, on the knee bolster below and left of the steering column. Drilled thru the plastic and the arm for the gas pedal. Fished the wire thru wrapped it around acouple times and bota-bing bota-boom I had man. throttle control and high idle function.

One thing I learned is it's impossible to take the gas pedal off and also nearly impossible to fit a med. sized drill in behind the dash support and still be able to drill. SO take the lower dash support piece out and stick a block (pliers in my case) between the gas pedal arm and the firewall. Makes drilling a piece of cake.

I will have more pictures to come shortly. But here is the mounting location for the push/pull button.

excellent work nathan...Ive been thinking about doing this. I was looking at a fancy cable but its kind of pricey:

Did you run the cable through the firewall to the throttle linkage? Any more info would be great.

1st pic shows the cable going thru the knee bolster.
2nd pic shows the hole drilled into the gas pedal arm. Really fuzzy for some reason.
3rd pic is an overall shot.

I forgot to mention to zip tie the cable up outta the way.

Yup - second one is a lil out of focus

Nice job - I will have to do this mod - it sure beats the old stick jammed between the go pedal and seat

I've yet to see how well it holds going down the road but does fine holding it at a set RPM idling. If nothing else you could go buy a small wooden dowel rod and cut a groove in it to slip over the shaft attached behind the button. Then trim the length to get it to hold a certain RPM. They do make some cables that lock into position tho so that might be better if one was to use it for cruise control.

Don't know that I'd want to use a setup like that for cruise especially with an auto because it won't disengage when you step on the brakes.
You might just keep on going...
