alright fellas ive got a buddy with a 96 12 valve, his truck runs just fine in hot or cold wether. Although he has a fair amount of white smoke puffing out of his crank case vent tube or whatever the technical name is. From the info I have found it could be rings or 1,345,234,346 other things so he is contemplating rebuilding it (or having me do it).
where can we get a rebuild kit for a reasonable price? The ones Ive seen have $1100+
I'm seeing 12V's on ebay going for $8k. (new drop in)
You can find good cores for about $800. (needs rebuilt)
A somewhat wore out 12v will cost you around $2,500.
Just rebuild it, for $1k, a put it back in the truck. You'll probably have about $1,800 invested in the end, but you can slide a cam, or coat the pistons if you want. Or, even fly cut the pistons and go with a bigger cam and put some better valve springs in it... Then you could turn 4,500RPM....
but, I'm crazy like that.

I bought my 95 12ver for 1200 bucks. With 80k on it, and it runs just fine...
I was thinking about maybe selling my motor to my buddy and taking his and building some sweet....not sure yet though.
Deals are to be had. I'm just talking about everyday run of mill, "I need a motor now" price.

how much do you think a rebuild would cost with a few upgrades, possibly a cam and all the appropriate headwork done right away like o-ringing or fire-ringing...im pretty sure ive got way too much blowby...its spitting out oil from that tube and i got a ton of leaks on that motor..so to start fresh would be just great..id try to do it myself but dont have the right tools and enough knowledge to tackle something that big.....
Depends on who does the work, how much machine work is needed, and if it needs new pistons.
Anything over 100k will probably need new pistons. They shrink with repeated heat/cool cycles.
5.9 Rebuild kits are going for $700 before shipping on ebay, w/o pistons. Pistons are $25 - $75 each for a 12V. ONLY 12V pistons will work. You can coat, shave, or cut them, depending what you want. Just keep in mind 500HP is easy to have on the factory parts, so no need to go crazy.
A Cam is about $600. Unless you are gonna spin'er up to the moon. A regular re-grind is good enough for a daily driver.
Figure in head work. Sometimes it's better to buy a new head than repair an old one. The heads on a 5.9 crack for teh same reason the pistons shrink.
A ported, polished and o-ring'd head is gonna run about $1,400. I'd recomend a head like this. Alot of benefits and a huge reduction in risk of blowing a HG, and cooler EGT.
You'll probably need about $450 of machine work on teh block.
Then just torque it all back together... Have the machine shop assemble the bottom end and cam/lifters.
If they do that, you can assemble the rest of the motor with a toolset from walmart, a torque wrench and a few specialty parts from Sears. I did.
Having somebody else do it, is gonna run you about $7k out the door. Doing it yourself, you might get away under $3k.
It's a super easy motor to assemble. All you need is a few torque specs. Nothing is to special. THE HARDEST part is setting the timing on the P-Pump.
