In the past two weeks my cummins has developed a ticking noise. It only happens at idle thru about 1250rpms. Sometimes it is louder than others, and sometimes it doesn't even do it at all. I have tried the screwdriver stethescope technique and i swear i could've heard it one time in between the oil pan and the bell housing of the tranny. Fly wheel and everything looks fine along with the starter. But after that i can't seem to hear it there anymore.
It sounds like it may be coming from the valve cover area, but it can also be heard pretty clearly through the driverside fender well.
Any help with this will be greatly appreciated as i am at my wits end.

My 06 does it all the time, but I would think it uncommon for a 97. Heard plently of 06 with the problem. Mine was carbon buildup, helped out by the low sulfur diesel we now have to run according to a couple sources. I'm no expert, but the low sulfur diesel may be affecting yours too.
after some research i have found this may be the issue too. Im going to change the fuel filters today and add some 2cycle oil so we will see if that helps

not sure what kind of ticking your talking about... mine was ticking under acceleration..I figured it was injector. I ran some PS diesel kleen through it and it went away.
I get a ticking on mine from mthe drivers side fender area..I'm pretty sure it's my IP as it'll get quieter and louder from time to time depending on how much 2stroke I put in the fuel for lube

i feel like the 2 cycle will help, this ulsd probably isnt helping anyway. My ticking goes away after about 1250rpms , the ticking gets faster up until that point and then just goes away.
And where is the primer located?

It's the rubber button on the side of the lift pump. The ticking noise is most likley the LP. It does it when it's on it's way out (even though some pumps do it forever before they go), or if you have stretched the overflow valve spring to up the fuel pressure.

Update- changed the fuel filter and added some 2cycle from walmart, ticking has subsided and i dont believe i have ever heard the truck idle this smoothly before. Its like a whole different truck.
