Okay. Well my 4x4 is not working. I checked my vacuum and I'm getting vacuum to the CAD on the front axle. So I bought a CAD used and had the hardest time changing it. I took off the three e clips and went to pull the CAD out of its housing and it didn't slide out easy. I had to pry like hell to get it out. Then I had to basically beat it back in. I put the three clips on and all that. Well before I put it on I put the vac lines on the cad and put it in 4x4 and it slid over and all that. Kinda slow but it slid. All the gears in the axle that i could see looked good. Well put it all back together and put it in 4h and nothing. No light. So I went down in my field and tried and it didn't work. Well so I pulled it in 4l and it grinded in. Well I put it in drive and it loaded up and all that but no light. So I thought it was in but I went up a grassy hill and it still wasn't in 4x4. So I grinded it back out of 4l and tried all kinds of crap like stomping it and wiggling the vac lines and nothing. I don't know if I screwed up the CAD by beating on it. But I didn't know any other way to get it back in? Are these pressed in from the factory? Help me out. No since in having a 4x4 with no 4x4.
The vacuum actuators are a PITA to get out. the vac lines could be partially clogged, or leaking so I would check that. Make sure those lines are clean! Next i would check the vacuum switch on top of the t-case. There are 4 lines going to it. Vac supply, 4wd, 2wd, and a vent.
I'm not sure. I had it off yesterday and before I bolted it back on I hooked up the vac lines and watched it slide and it valid kinda slowly over. Didn't look like enough to slide the collar but then again I don't know what slow is. I put my finger on the lines and I felt vacuum. It wasn't strong but again I don't know what strong is. I'm gonna pull it back apart and look at it when the rain stops
Its possible and I hope it is simple and not something wrong in the axle. From what I could see in the axle all the gears looked good. guy told me to get some vacuum line and hook to the CAD and jack up front tire and suck on the line and try to turn tire?
Well I can created more suction through a straw then my vacuum is. I can't hold it as long obviously but I make way more suction then the vacuum on the lines. So is my vacuum weak? When I stick my finger on the vacuum line its basically just enough to feel it.
Ya the lines don't fit all the way down or snug on the CAD. That could be losing it there. Guy I bought the truck from said he bought it from a guy who farmed in Alabama and this guy used it on a farm and to pull his drag car. So you can imagine how dirty it was. And I've still not got it all.
take a small flat head screw driver inside the rubber boots and twist. get all that crud out then spray it with some carb cleaner. put it back on the cad then take a zip tie on both of them make sure you get them nice and tight. make sure the rubber boots coming onto the metal lines coming down your frame from the t case are on there tight also. bing bamb boom. try her out, let me know how you make out
How much vacuum do you have though? Like I can put my finger over the line and just enough to feel the vacuum. So I'm wondering if there is even enough vacuum on it to pull the collar over? But all my other vacuum operated stuff works good. But I could have a leak somewhere in the 4x4 part losing vacuum.
thats why i said to check all the connections under the truck as well. check the two other fittings that come off the frame rail. then pull the vacuum block off the top of the trasfercase. make sure its on there correctly. it only works when its on one way, maybe its got a loose connection or its on incorrectly. there are two tabs on the vacuum switch on top then there is two cut outs on the rubber plug for at he vacuum make sure they line up. i used to have to mess with mine in the snow untill i figured it all out.
i dont know the exact spec on how much vacuum it takes to slide it over, if all your other vacuum ran stuff works correctly then id say its the sloppy fittings
im almost betting you that making the connection tight will fix your issue, try zip ties and if that works i sugjest getting very small hose clamps for long term fix
Thats the biggest down fall to the dodges we drive. it would have been alot more trust worthy of them to install locking hubs or some other non vacuum style 4wd
Most common vacuum leaks are acid rotted hose to cruise control actuator under the battery and turbo heat melted hose that goes though the firewall.
