Okay guys. When I bought my truck it seemed like it idled low. The tach on a 96 is weird. There's 0 then right above that is is a line then up from that is a line then 1000 rpm. Well mine idled right above the mark right below 1000 so I'm guessing 500? If that is correct it idled at like 750 in park or neutral. In drive it idled at right below 500 and tiny bit more lower with ac on. If i stopped real hard with ac on it would lope a little and if i had it in reverse with brake on, on a incline it slighty lope a little. So I raised it and now warmed up it idles little below the 1000 mark, maybe 900. In drive with ac on it looks like it idles around 700 if the tachs are correct. Well I know spec is 750-800 in drive ac on. Well in park it just seems like it idles too high at 900. Used to when you started it it would turn over a couple times with no throttle like most of these trucks. Well now it sounds like you give it throttle when I start it. When I put it in drive it kinda grabs hard too. I don't know if I'm paranoid or used to low idle. I want what's best for this truck course I plan on keeping it forever and want to keep it alive and well as long as I can.
There's no way the first line past zero is 500. On my tach there is 0 then right above that is a line, then there is another line then 1000. Can you post a pic of your tach or the tach your talking about? My dad has a 98 and it has way more lines than mine.
The first two marks on this tach are a lot closer together on that one. Mine are more spaced out. I'm mainly just wondering where its supposed to idle in park. It seems high at 900 but I don't know for sure.
That seems about right... I know mine's about 760 in drive with the A/C on (I checked the cluster against an optical tach when I set it) so I'll watch where it settles in park with the A/C off later this afternoon.
Mine doesn't seem to want to rise to any more than 800-825 in neutral. It was at the normal idle speed in drive, but also wasn't fully warm. Not sure if that would make a difference but I'll check tomorrow on the way to work.
Hey cheap12v mine has the same as what u have and i idle in gear with ac on right on the 750 mark it is the line between 0 and 1000 rpm. It is around 850 900 in park just set it on the line inbetween and u are golden...
Okay. Well so far I think its fine at 900 in P or N. If I knew what the has lines were I could tell where it idles in D with ac on. But now that I know where the adjustment is I can do it anytime. But like I said my tach has 0 then almost directly above it is a mark then a gap and another line then 1000 rpm.
cheap12v they didnt make special gauge clusters for these dodges every one is the same i would love to see a picture of yours if you are THAT convinced yours is different from any other 94-98 stock 12v. that being said dauntless89 is spot on the mark below 1000 is 750 i like the way my truck idles at 850-900 rmp when its warm because sometimes it idles a little lower when it cold starts
That's what my cluster looks like. Based on where my truck cold idles and what my optical tach said when adjusting it last, I'd put money on the second line down from 1k being 500.
Yes my tach looks like that! So it is 0 then 250 then I between is 500 then 750 then 1k. So then actually mine used to idle like right at 745 in drive with ac on. But I'm not sure why it seems so low and would lope in reverse with brakes on? Well now mine idles at like 780-800 in drive and 900 in park. Sound about right?
When I say lope, ifni was backed up on a slight or incline in reverse with brakes on Oct would chug a little. Also if I was going down said with ac on and stopped hard it would chug a little. But who knows. Its seems good now. 900 in park sounds a little fast but I guess its alright.
Yea thats weird that your truck would chug or begin to stall above 700 rpm if it was cold i wouldnt be too surprised, but if its doing it when you come to an abrupt stop maybe its a fuel pressure problem? Do you have a fuel pressure gauge?
I recently made up my own mechanical fuel pressure gauge for pretty cheap and learned my fuel pressure was dropping when throttling the engine, even tho ive never expirenced fuel pressure symptoms. it was a smart thing to do imo.
I just do it by ear to get the lowest in gear A/C on rpm on a warmed up engine.
Really no need to know what rpm it's spinning.
