Okay I'll go over the problems. Its my parents 98 dodge 2500 ecsb 2wd Cummins. We bought it a year ago from a guy for 3300. Tranny was rebuilt in 07. Well now we are having problems. First problem is motor is turned way up for this stock auto. It slips with od off in 3rd in low ROMs and overdrive you can't even give it any hard throttle at all because it just slips and jerks. What is cheapest fix for this. Some guy from a tranny shop has a built twin turbo 24v and he built his 47re and it holds all his power. He built the rear end in this truck and said a VB kit would fix the slipping? Also now the truck gear hunt like crazy. I don't see how they stand to drive it. It will gear hunt and will lock and unlock and its just annoying... my dad is self employed dump truck driver and my mom just uses it as a DD so my dad basically brushes off all the problems, but I don't. Honestly it probably needs a rebuild with it slipping so bad but my dad don't have the money to. He can come up with a 100 dollars here and there to put in it but he also has to take care of his dumptruck and tires for it aint cheap and atleast 600 a week in diesel. And he is one of those I'all drive it til the SOB quits.... so basically I do all the research and tell him what's wrong with it. Lol any help on the slipping and gear hunting??
Sounds like you've burnt up the clutchs and/or TC. I would turn the power back down on it and that might help you get by a little longer. Check the TV cable adjustment, might need a new govn pressure solenoid? Probably will need a rebuild soon though sounds like. Either way it's gonna take more than $100.
I'm sure it is going bad. I've checked the fluid and its red and don't smell burnt. And trust me I know a rebuild is not cheap. I may try to turn it back down I'm just not sure what's done to it. He bought it already turned up. The guy I mentioned about the VB kit rebuilds transmissions and does work on the side at his house and does it pretty cheap. My dad is supposed to do the VB kit after Christmas sometime and then we will see what's wrong. But it would be a lot better without the gear hunting. I heard maybe tps?
Well you turned up the power without properly upgrading the tranny...
If by some chance you havent completely smoked some clutches you need to turn it down. I'll never understand why people turn up power without properly upgrading the transmission first
And if your parents can only afford $100 here and there, you best get rid of that truck.
To pay someone to rebuild that tranny will be at least $1200 for a stock rebuild if you pull the tranny yourself and thats just clutches.
The valve body kit will enable the tranny to hold more power but you'll still be stuck with a stock converter. AND any valve body kit is a very detailed and sensitive install. I wouldnt do it in a mud hole in your back yard while drinking beer.
We didn't turn it up. It was turned up when he bought it. I guess I made them out to be bad off but there not. My dad is just drive it til it breaks type and will figure out a way to get it fixed.. lol. Its not like he don't make pretty good money, but a lot of it goes back to bills and his dump truck, tires, fuel, etc.. but I would like to get it to last as long as it can.
Well as far as I heard the gear hunting may be a the throttle position sensor. My dad had an 02 dodge 24v 4x4 and it would gear hunt from 3rd to 4th. But this truck is doing it a lot. As for the tranny I guess I will tell him to try that VB kit the tranny guy said would fix or help it. But I'm definitely gonna look into turning it down.
